The Department of Lands, Planning and Environment (DLPE) supports the Territory’s economic development and protects our natural and cultural assets through integrated planning, evidence-based advice and efficient regulation.

As the Senior Remote Sensing Officer your primary objective is to support the Remote Sensing Unit within the Land Resources Division, to provide contemporary remote sensing services and technology that assess, monitor and report on land resources, land condition and vegetation change in the Northern Territory.

The Remote Sensing Unit is responsible for the management, dissemination and use of remotely sensed data and critical infrastructure and systems, including the departments High Performance Computer facility, for a range of scientific monitoring programs (including rangelands monitoring) in the Northern Territory.

Your key duties and responsibilities involve supporting field-based Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) image capture programs; validating remotely sensed and field captured data; developing and maintaining Python/RStudio processing pipelines; supporting the application of machine learning and classification models for land cover and land use change detection methodologies; maintaining and updating the divisions code base and image libraries; and updating the divisions field collection form library (currently ODK).

To be successful you require a degree in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Information Technology or related field. You will need to have very strong image processing and Geographic Information System (GIS) skills, and the ability to prepare and analyse spatial information products and technical reports. Project management skills, including the ability to plan, prioritise and meet deadlines, plus excellent communication and negotiation skills and the ability to build and maintain effective networks is essential.

In return, you’ll receive a competitive remuneration package, inclusive of 12% superannuation, 6 weeks’ recreational and 3 weeks’ personal leave, 17.5% annual leave allowance and additional paid leave to cover the Christmas – New Year’s shut-down.
