Use your investigative skills to make a positive difference for investors and consumers in the Australian financial system.
A future with ASIC means that your work will contribute to ASIC's vision for a fair, strong and efficient financial system for all Australians. We value what you will bring. We value those with sharp, analytical minds who are open to challenging the way things are done.
Our team
ASIC's Enforcement and Compliance Group (ECG) oversees initial inquiries, compliance, and enforcement action across multiple sectors. In 2024-25, ECG began over 240 investigations, and obtained over $100 million in civil penalties and multiple criminal convictions and banning orders.
Enforcement Inquiries and Compliance (EIC) teams handle early-stage misconduct investigations and decide whether cases advance to further investigation or seek administrative or compliance outcomes.
Investigations teams manage complex cases through the entire investigation process, conduct related civil litigation, and support criminal prosecutions conducted by the Commonwealth DPP.
Senior Investigator positions are currently open in both Investigations and EIC teams. This recruitment will create a pool to fill current and future vacancies within ECG.
The role
As a Senior Investigator, you will take a leading role in complex investigations of suspected misconduct and obtaining enforcement outcomes. You will have the opportunity to participate in varied, interesting and impactful work. More specifically, you will:
- Strategically plan, scope, manage and direct complex investigations within multi-disciplinary teams.
- Take a leading role in the preparation of briefs of evidence for criminal, civil and/or administrative matters and provide support to any resulting enforcement action.
- Identify and address complex issues arising during investigations, and advise on operational, tactical and evidential considerations.
- Gather evidence through compulsory notices and examinations, interviews and search warrants, and prepare statements and affidavits.
- Use ASIC's evidence management technology and other systems to interrogate, analyse and derive insights from high volumes of evidence and data.
- Coach and mentor less experienced staff.
About you
As the ideal candidate you will be inquisitive, have an analytical mind set and be comfortable working with complex information in a changing environment. You will be proactive and outcome-driven, with the ability to see how your work contributes to the bigger picture. With a consultative and collaborative interpersonal style, you will enjoy working as part of a large, multi-skilled team.
In addition, you will have:
- Significant, senior experience in an investigative role, ideally working on complex criminal or civil matters in a regulatory, government or law enforcement setting, or an industry regulated by ASIC.
- Advanced evidence gathering skills, and experience in the preparation of briefs of evidence for criminal and/or civil proceedings.
- A demonstrated ability to use digital investigative tools.
- Strong analytical skills including experience interrogating large volumes of data and working with numerical and financial transaction reports.
- Experience in guiding and coaching other team members.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication and stakeholder management skills.
Tertiary qualifications in commerce, accounting, criminology, law or another relevant discipline will be well regarded, as will qualifications in investigations.
Experience in industries regulated by ASIC including superannuation, insurance, credit, banking, wealth management/financial advisory or insolvency will also be well regarded.
To work with us, you need to be an Australian citizen and be prepared to complete an ASIC Suitability and Baseline Assessment which is issued by ASIC's Security team.
