ABOUT THE ROLE

This role will suit an experienced government lawyer with an interest in maritime safety and protecting the marine environment. Reporting to the Principal Solicitor, the Senior Solicitor – Information Management in the Office of Legal Counsel will be responsible for managing AMSA’s Freedom of Information (FOI) and Privacy functions. You will proactively identify and manage legal risk while assisting AMSA’s staff to understand and deliver best practice information management.

Key Responsibilities

  • processing requests, managing internal and external reviews, collecting and reporting FOI statistics, and maintaining AMSA’s Information Publication Scheme
  • adding value to AMSA’s internal FOI capability, including through the provision of training and guidance to staff and decision-makers
  • delivering continuous improvement to FOI policies, procedures and record-keeping
  • managing stakeholder relationships inside and outside AMSA, and representing AMSA at FOI forums
  • In relation to FOI, you will be responsible for:
  • leading on privacy related projects, including contributing to Privacy Threshold Assessments and Privacy Impact Assessments with business areas undertaking high privacy risk projects
  • developing the annual Privacy Management Plan and delivering related actions, including privacy training
  • managing data breaches in accordance with AMSA’s Data Breach Response Plan
  • supporting the implementation of proposed Privacy Act reforms, including identifying operational impacts and process enhancement requirements
  • delivering continuous improvement to Privacy policies, procedures and record-keeping
  • In relation to Privacy, you will be responsible for:
  • Provide administrative assistance to OLC as required
  • Commit to the AMSA Code of Conduct and Values.​

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

To be successful in this position, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Tertiary level qualification in law, or comparable overseas qualification. Ideally, candidates will have five years of post-admission legal experience (preferably in a government organisation).
  • Admission to practice as a legal practitioner in an Australian State or Territory and ability to acquire a practising certificate.
  • Extensive experience managing FOI and Privacy Acts, with a proven ability to exercise sound judgement and timely decision making in the management of complex FOI and Privacy matters.
  • ​Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex concepts across all organisational levels.
  • ​Demonstrated ability to engage with, and build and sustain relationships with, internal and external stakeholders.
  • ​Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality outcomes through strong attention to detail.
