The Organisation

Our client operates within the not-for-profit and community development sector, delivering programs that support individuals and families experiencing social or economic disadvantage. Their work spans areas such as employment, education, aged and disability care, and broader community inclusion initiatives. Alongside direct service delivery, they also invest in research and policy to influence long-term, systemic change aimed at reducing inequality across society.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring end-to-end payroll processes by managing a team of 4 and by ensuring accuracy and compliance while delivering excellent service to employees and stakeholders.

Your key duties will include:

  • Lead and develop a high-performing payroll team, fostering collaboration, capability, and compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Oversee end-to-end payroll processing to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to enterprise agreements, awards, and statutory obligations.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex payroll queries, providing expert advice to employees, leaders, and key stakeholders.
  • Ensure data integrity across payroll, HRIS, and time and attendance systems, maintaining a processing error rate below 1%.
  • Manage month-end and year-end reporting, reconciliations, and statutory submissions, ensuring full compliance and audit readiness.
  • Lead payroll projects and system enhancements, including testing, configuration, and upgrades to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimise payroll processes, reporting, and system functionality.
  • Build strong relationships with HR, Finance, WHS, and external vendors to deliver high-quality, integrated payroll services.
  • Provide reporting and analysis on salary, wages, and payroll trends to support business planning and decision-making.
  • Champion organisational values by promoting a safe, inclusive, and ethical workplace culture aligned with company standards

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Proven leadership and team development experience within payroll operations, driving accuracy, compliance, and service excellence.
  • Strong technical payroll expertise, including interpreting enterprise agreements, managing legislative compliance, and overseeing EOFY, tax, and superannuation processes.
  • Advanced system capability with experience using major payroll platforms (e.g., Chris21 or similar HRIS).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, resolve issues, and build trusted relationships.
  • Analytical and solutions-focused mindset, demonstrating initiative in process improvement, project leadership, and adherence to organisational values.
