Principal Engineer

Location: Sydney (Hybrid – 2 days in office)

Salary: $220,000-$230,000+Super+Equity Options

About the Role

A high-growth technology company is seeking a Principal Engineer to help design, scale, and lead the development of a next-generation digital engagement platform. This role offers the opportunity to define technical strategy, influence architectural direction, and mentor a growing team, while remaining hands-on across the stack.

As a senior technical leader, you will work closely with the leadership, product, and engineering teams to shape long-term strategy, solve complex challenges, and drive engineering excellence across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Define and drive architecture: Shape the technical vision and ensure scalability, reliability, and security across all systems.
• Lead complex initiatives: Translate high-level objectives into actionable technical projects and deliver them from concept to production.
• Mentor and develop others: Provide guidance, feedback, and support to senior engineers while fostering a culture of growth and collaboration.
• Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with product, design, and leadership to align technical strategy with business priorities.
• Scale operations: Help establish observability, reliability, and delivery practices that support growth and operational excellence.

Requirements

• Extensive experience in TypeScript / Node.js development and modern full-stack environments.
• Proven record of architecting and scaling distributed systems in production.
• Deep understanding of system design, performance optimisation, and security principles.
• Excellent communicator capable of influencing stakeholders across multiple teams.
• Ownership mindset with a focus on driving initiatives through to successful outcomes.

Desirable Experience

• Experience with analytics and data platforms, such as ClickHouse or other OLAP systems.
• Experience in adtech or martech (ad serving, attribution, audience targeting, DSPs, etc.).
• Familiarity with Cloudflare’s developer ecosystem (Workers, Queues, KV).
• Understanding of SRE practices and large-scale system operations.

• Frontend: React, Next.js, React Native
• Infrastructure: Cloudflare (Workers, Queues, KV)
• Testing & CI/CD: Vitest, Playwright, GitHub Actions
• Monitoring: DataDog, Sentry, OpenTelemetry
