The Opportunity
Become an integral part of a trusted and dynamic Governance Team. This role provides invaluable support in a timely and effective manner to the Senior Coordinator Governance, as well as to Council’s Manager Governance and Head of Governance, in all matters relating to the provision of governance advice and support by the Governance Team to internal clients and stakeholders.
The Governance Officer will perform a critical role in ensuring the Governance Team smoothly and effectively manages all governance related functions. These Functions include the preparation for and running of Council and Committee Meetings. They will also support, policy reviews, management of delegations and authorisations, personal interests returns, maintenance of statutory registers, and governance intranet and web pages.
Greatly contributing to the Governance team maintaining its position as a trusted advisor to Council that is able to significantly contribute in a positive way to quality governance outcomes to its internal clients and stakeholders, including Councillors, the CEO and Executive Leadership Team, other Council Staff and members of the public.
This position also plays a key role, among other things, in the facilitation and delivery of school visits run by Council throughout the year which is a critical interface between Council and the local community.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service to Council employees, Councillors, the public, and other key stakeholders.
- Undertake research and provide advice to management, staff, and Councillors as required on Governance related activities and matters.
- Update and ensure Statutory Registers are maintained in accordance with the Local Government Acts.
- Prepare, compile, and distribute accurate agendas, minutes and associated documents for meetings and briefings coordinated by the Governance team, for Councillors, Council Officers, and the public within defined timelines.
- Attend Council meetings and briefings as required to record notes and minutes of meetings.
- Prepare correspondence and governance reports as required.

About you
To be successful in this role you will have the following:
- Degree or diploma with some relevant experience or lesser formal qualifications and substantial relevant experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrating scrupulous attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and influencing skills and demonstrated ability to adapt to new situations, showing initiative in responding to challenging and competing work tasks.
- Excellent computer skills and experience with the operation of a variety of Windows based applications and databases.
- Must hold or be able to obtain an Employee Working with Children Check.
