Senior Deckhand / Relief Skipper
· Located offshore from Port Douglas
· Rotating roster 4 days on/2 days off
· Live offshore required for 3 nights per swing
· Salary $81,280 per annum
We’re seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Deckhand / Relief Skipper to join our professional marine operations team aboard one of our offshore vessels servicing the Great Barrier Reef. This hands-on role is ideally suited to a maritime professional who enjoys variety, responsibility and teamwork in a dynamic offshore environment.
The position operates on a 4 days on / 2 days off rotating roster, which includes three consecutive nights living offshore at our reef pontoon facilities.
About the role:
As a key member of the vessel crew, you will contribute to the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, assisting in all aspects of marine and guest activities while maintaining a strong focus on safety, presentation and customer service. The position also includes the opportunity to step up as Relief Skipper during periods of master leave, taking command of the vessel and leading the crew to ensure continued safe and efficient operations.
Key Responsibilities:
As Deckhand:
Assist with vessel operations including berthing, mooring, anchoring, refuelling and passenger transfers
Conduct routine maintenance, cleaning and upkeep of the vessel and pontoon facilities
Carry out underwater maintenance such as hull scrubs and window cleaning (Divemaster qualification required)
Operate and maintain onboard systems and safety equipment
Support dive and snorkel operations, guest assistance and emergency drills
Uphold all safety and environmental management procedures
As Relief Skipper:
Take command of the vessel during periods of master leave, ensuring safe navigation, vessel operation, and crew leadership
Manage voyage planning, record-keeping and compliance with AMSA and company requirements
Oversee the safety of all crew and passengers
Oversee the performance of all crew
Ensure operational efficiency, guest satisfaction, and adherence to all safety management systems
Liaise with shore-based operations to maintain seamless vessel scheduling and maintenance coordination
Key Requirements:
Current Master Class <24m NC (essential)
Current Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 (MED 2) with a minimum of two years’ experience
Divemaster qualification or higher - required to conduct underwater vessel maintenance duties such as hull scrubs and window cleaning (desirable)
Experience working a 4 on 2 day off roster that includes public holidays
Be able to take direction from vessel master and perform duties at times unsupervised
Proven leadership and interpersonal skills with a commitment to safety, teamwork, and guest service
Experience with Detroit, MTU, Cummins, Scania and Deutz Diesel Engines (highly regarded)
Experience in commercial tourism or marine operations (highly regarded)
