Position Description — Mechanical Fitter (Project)

Role: Mechanical Fitter
Type: Fixed-term (3 months) with view to permanent
Location: Somerton, VIC (site-based; occasional travel between nearby sites)
Reports to: Site Supervisor / Project Manager
Hours: 6:00am-4:30pm (typical) with overtime/Saturdays 6am-2pm

Purpose

Baillie Industries will deliver the complete mechanical install of a PET wash line. Job purpose is to deliver safe, efficient mechanical installation, maintenance and repairs on an industrial project in Somerton, meeting schedule, quality and safety objectives. Support commissioning and handover.

Key Responsibilities

Installation: Install mechanical equipment for a new wash line—conveyors, screw/roller equipment, pumps, motors, gearboxes, bearings, guards and structures.

Precision & QA: Perform alignments, tensioning, tolerances and torqueing; verify dimensions against drawings/ITPs; complete QA records and sign-offs.

Fabrication Support: Basic cutting, drilling, grinding, marking-out and small mods; assist boilermakers where needed.

Safety & Compliance: Follow SWMS/JSEAs, permits, isolations/LOTO and housekeeping; participate in pre-starts and toolbox talks.

Commissioning Support: Function checks, run-ups, adjustments, punch-list clearance and defect rectification.

Teamwork & Communication: Coordinate with supervisors, other trades and client reps; escalate issues early.

Skills & Experience

Essential

Australian Trade Qualification – Fitter/Cert III Mechanical.

Demonstrated site experience in heavy industrial/manufacturing environments.

Ability to read drawings and work to tolerances.

Sound fault-finding and problem-solving.

Fitness for site work; ability to use EWPs/scaffolds.

Desirable

Forklift licence (LF)

Tools & PPE

Company-supplied: major plant, EWP, lifting gear and specialist tools.

Employee-supplied: basic hand tools kit; standard PPE (hi-vis, safety boots, glasses, gloves, hard hat—project-specific PPE provided as required).

Employment & Pay

Classification/Rate: Competitive hourly rate + penalties + super, commensurate with experience and tickets.

Overtime/Allowances: In accordance with company policy and applicable industrial instrument.

Probity: Pre-employment medical and/or drug & alcohol testing may apply.

KPIs / Performance

Work completed to spec, on time, without rework.

Zero harm: adherence to SWMS/LOTO/permit systems and housekeeping.

Accurate QA documentation and punch-list closure.

Positive feedback from supervisor and client.
