About us

The Victor Harbor Golf Club (VHGC or Club) prides itself on being one of the best country golf clubs in South Australia. Our course is set in an idyllic location overlooking Encounter Bay and boasts one of the best first tees in the world.

Job Overview

The VHGC General Manager oversees the daily operations and financial running of the Club. It is the General Manager's responsibility to ensure strategic goals are met by setting operational policies, creating and maintaining budgets, managing employees and contractors, and overseeing the operations of the Club. The Club has contracted out the operation of the Pro Shop and the Restaurant.

As the General Manager, you will foster cross-functional relationships that span further than the walls of VHGC, and utilise these to grow those that interact with us, and in turn lead the Club towards its vision of being the best golf club on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The General Manager is the face of the VHGC.

Position Overview

The General Manager will ensure a strong business management approach to the conduct of the Club’s affairs, maintaining the highest level of professionalism in service for members and visitors.

Reporting to the Committee of Management (“the Committee”), the General Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the Club’s operations. This includes, but is not limited to:

Performing to high standards and setting an example for all Club employees.

Managing the contracts for the operation of the Pro Shop and Restaurant to ensure excellent service to members and visitors.

Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulatory obligations.

Managing the Club to ensure it remains commercially viable and efficiently operated, maximising financial stability.

Providing timely and accurate operational information to the Committee.

Implementing Club policies in conjunction with the Committee.

Driving and executing initiatives from the Club’s Strategic Plan.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Stakeholder Management

Ensure members and visitors receive high-quality service and experiences in all dealings with the Club, its employees and contractors.

Deliver timely and effective communications to members and visitors to maintain engagement and support for the Club.

Gather feedback from members and visitors on their experiences and implement improvements.

Develop and maintain relationships with sponsors to ensure their continued support.

Manage supplier and contractor relationships, including contract negotiation to achieve best value.

Foster positive relationships with government and industry bodies, including (but not limited to) the SA Government, City of Victor Harbor, and Golf Australia.

Engage with the local community, acting as an ambassador for the Club.

Represent the Club at functions, meetings, and social events as required.

Risk and Compliance

Act as the Licensee under the Liquor Licensing Act.

Manage compliance with relevant legislation, including but not limited to:

The Club’s Constitution, ByLaws, Regulations and Policies

Associations Incorporation Act

Discrimination including –

Equal Opportunity Act

Disability Discrimination Act

Sex Discrimination Act

Age Discrimination Act

Workplace Health & Safety Act

Liquor Licensing Act

Children’s Protection Act

Environment Protection Act

“Own” and continually update the Risk Management Framework, Risk Appetite and Risk Register.

Finance

Develop annual and long-term budgets with Committee input.

Ensure expenditure across all areas remains within approved budgets.

Oversee the preparation of financial plans and programs to achieve approved objectives, including expansion initiatives.

Prepare and analyse monthly management reports for presentation to the Committee.

Manage day-to-day financial operations, maintaining sound financial procedures and authorisations.

Prepare the Annual Report and liaise with the Club’s auditors to ensure compliance with financial and statutory obligations.

Ensure accounting and reporting procedures follow accepted principles and safeguard the Club’s financial assets.

Committee Support

Fulfil the responsibilities of Public Officer, Licensee, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Club.

Provide the Committee and Sub Committees with timely, accurate, and relevant advice and information.

Act as principal advisor to the Committee on issues impacting Club operations.

Implement Committee policies and decisions promptly and effectively.

People Management

Manage the full recruitment and hiring process in line with approved policies and industry best practice.

Maintain policies and procedures to meet all employment and WH&S legislation, ensuring a safe working environment.

Foster organisational growth and enhance member experience through staff development and performance management.

Provide leadership, direction, and support through participative management practices that utilise staff skills and commitment.

Work with the key personnel to manage the contractual relationship with the Pro Shop and Restaurant.

Operations

Maintain transparent administrative and financial systems, including robust procedures, records, and controls.

Ensure the Club’s information technology systems are fit for purpose and support service delivery.

Develop and implement marketing and promotional strategies across multiple channels.

Oversee the delivery of events and corporate days, maximising sponsorship and partnership opportunities.

Ensure Clubhouse and Course facilities are consistently presented to a high standard.

Regularly evaluate and benchmark service outcomes across key operational areas:

Bar, Restaurant & Functions

Manage stock ordering and maintain cost-effective levels with regular stocktakes.

Establish pricing policies for liquor and functions.

Provide suitable and regular entertainment for members.

Promote the Club as a preferred function venue.

Manage and communicate effectively with the contracted operator of the restaurant.

Golf Operations

Work with the Match Committee, the Course Superintendent and the Golf Professional to ensure efficient and professional conduct of all golf events.

Liaise regularly with the Club Captain regarding upcoming events.

Manage and communicate effectively with the contracted operator of the Pro Shop.

Ensure the booking systems, and golf management systems are operating effectively in collaboration with the contracted Golf Professional.

Course

In conjunction with the Course Committee and Course Superintendent:

Maintain the course at a consistently high standard.

Present proposals to the Committee for improvements that enhance safety, enjoyment and playability.

Manage planning and progress of the Course Master Plan.

Manage and maintain effective communication with any external course maintenance contractors.

Project Management

As part of ensuring the Club’s ongoing financial viability, the Club plans to seek Expressions of Interest in 2026 for a potential joint venture to develop excess land. This will be a significant project with an expected financial input from the joint venture partner which will ensure the continued financial sustainability of the Club.
The General Manager must demonstrate proven success and experience in managing complex, outcome-based projects at a senior level.

Experience

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in either Business Management, Hospitality, Sports/Leisure, Accounting, Diploma in Golf Management- PGA International Golf Institute (PGA IGI).
