The Organisation

The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia Limited (AHCSA) is the peak body representing Aboriginal community-controlled health and substance misuse services in South Australia at state and national levels.
Our primary role is to be the ‘health voice’ for all Aboriginal people in South Australia. We achieve this by advocating for the community and supporting workers through our Member Services with appropriate Aboriginal health programs based on a holistic perspective of health.

Summary of the Role

The Senior Project Officer, Culture Care Connect (CCC) program brings together key elements of suicide prevention planning, coordination and activity across regional networks, including raising awareness, early intervention, crisis management and aftercare services.

Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) participating in a community-controlled suicide prevention network will deliver aftercare services in partnership with existing regional mental health services, creating a strong and clear pathway between community-controlled services, mainstream services, and acute care settings for individuals at risk of or recovering from a suicide attempt, as well as their families and communities. This role is responsible for providing jurisdictional coordination and support to CCSPNs and Aftercare Services in South Australia.

The Senior Project Officer, Culture Care Connect is accountable to and reports to the Manager, Substance Misuse and Social and Emotional Wellbeing. The position works in close collaboration with all AHCSA staff, other members of the Substance Misuse and Social and Emotional Wellbeing Team, Public Health Medical Officers and Clinical Educators. It also works closely with Member Services, other key stakeholders and the community.

The position operates with a level of autonomy in coordinating jurisdictional activities in line with CCC program requirements, applying specialist knowledge and skills and adhering to well-established AHCSA policies, procedures, methods, and guidelines in its day-to-day work. The position uses initiative and professional judgment as necessary.

Essential Experience

  • Experience engaging with Aboriginal individuals, organisations, and communities to foster relationships and facilitate dialogue on mental health and suicide prevention.
  • Experience in developing and co-designing policies, plans and position statements and advocating for systemic change.
  • Experience in service mapping processes and the establishment of databases.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in community consultation, community development and coordinating and facilitating the establishment of networks.
  • Experience in prevention, treatment and after care strategies in the area of mental health and suicide prevention, drawing upon knowledge of legislation, policies and strategies, including prevention, culturally appropriate treatment and aftercare services.
  • Experience in developing the capacity of ACCHOs to respond to Aboriginal mental health and suicide prevention
  • A tertiary qualification in Mental Health, Psychology or Counselling or another field relevant to the position.
  • Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care or Certificate IV in Social & Emotional Wellbeing
