The Organisation

The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia Limited (AHCSA) is the peak body representing Aboriginal community-controlled health and substance misuse services in South Australia at state and national levels.

Our primary role is to be the ‘health voice’ for all Aboriginal people in South Australia. We achieve this by advocating for the community and supporting workers through our Member Services with appropriate Aboriginal health programs based on a holistic perspective of health.

Summary of the Role

The Senior Project Officer, Cultural Capability is responsible for coordinating initiatives that enhance the cultural capability of the health sector, ensuring that services are culturally safe, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of Aboriginal people. This role supports the integration of Aboriginal cultural values, practices, and traditional healing into healthcare systems, while advocating for policies and programs that are culturally appropriate and responsive.

The Senior Project Officer works closely with Member Services to deepen the understanding of Aboriginal community needs and cultural practices. The position fosters partnerships and knowledge-sharing between the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health (ACCH) sector, mainstream health services, and other key stakeholders. It also coordinates and delivers cultural capability training, workshops, and resources for both the ACCH sector and external health service providers, enhancing their ability to work effectively and respectfully with Aboriginal communities.

It also contributes to strategies and initiatives that promote holistic, culturally appropriate healthcare for Aboriginal people, ensuring services are culturally responsive and inclusive, consistent with best practice approaches and policy directions.

Essential Experience

• Experience in providing advice on workforce strategies to achieve cultural competence and culturally sensitive policy and practice
• Experience in advocacy and policy development on culturally appropriate strategies and practices.
• Experience working with health organisations to identify opportunities for strengthening cultural capability across the health system.
• Experience engaging with Aboriginal leaders, organisations and communities to develop culturally appropriate policies and practices across the Aboriginal and mainstream health sector.

Desirable Experience

• Experience in identifying training needs and creating curriculum to develop cultural competence in individuals, organisations and health systems.
• Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice
• Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
