Project Technical Lead (PTL) – Air Traffic Control Tower Systems

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Project Technical Lead (PTL) to provide technical leadership and systems engineering oversight for the Hamilton Island Tower Refurbishment Project. This key program will transition operations from a Mobile Control Tower (MCT) to a permanent Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, delivering a critical piece of infrastructure for Australia’s aviation network.

As PTL, you will be the single point of contact for engineering and technical matters, ensuring all systems that make up the ATC tower meet the required operational, safety, and security standards. You will lead across the full system lifecycle – design, development, test, verification, installation and acceptance – working with internal stakeholders, subject matter experts, and suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead technical readiness for all tower systems, ensuring compliance with the Client’s safety and system management frameworks.
• Act as the technical authority and trusted advisor for the project, orchestrating engagement between the Client, suppliers, and third-party specialists.
• Manage engineering review gates, testing, verification, and acceptance processes.
• Oversee site installation, integration, set-to-work and commissioning activities.
• Provide strong systems engineering and technical documentation (SEMP, TEMP, VCRMs).
• Identify, manage and track program risks while ensuring effective change and configuration management.
• Contribute to knowledge sharing, mentoring, and developing capability across the technical team.

About You

You are a systems engineering professional with strong leadership skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to drive outcomes across a complex technology program. You bring a blend of technical depth and stakeholder management experience, with a proven ability to deliver in high-stakes environments.

Essential skills & qualifications

• Degree in Engineering or Information Technology (or certified equivalent).
• Eligible for NV1 Australian Government Security Clearance.
• Eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (e.g. RPEQ).
• Proven experience applying Systems Engineering practices across the SDLC.
• Extensive experience in design, development, testing, and implementation of robust systems.
• Strong documentation and technical writing skills.
• Demonstrated ability to lead stakeholder and vendor engagement.

Highly desirable

• Experience in real-time systems, distributed architectures, message handling, and low-level data comms.
• Knowledge of electronics/electrical circuits and system monitoring protocols.
• Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status or eligibility.
• Familiarity with ISM, DO-278A, or similar safety/security frameworks.

• $1200.00 per day inc Super or ex GST
