eWater Limited is seeking a suitably qualified person to fill the role of Financial Controller. This is a critical organisational role. Your CPA/CA qualifications and extensive experience in a complex or not-for-profit environment, along with your strong technical knowledge of accounting standards, audit and compliance requirements will be needed to ensure success.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Financial Controller leads the financial operations of eWater Group, ensuring robust accounting, compliance, and financial management to support organisational sustainability.
This role manages day-to-day accounting functions, provides accurate and timely financial reporting, and partners with the COO and Executive to drive sound financial decision-making. The Financial Controller also oversees the Finance Officer, ensuring effective internal controls, audit readiness, and cashflow management.
Core Accountabilities include:
Financial Operations Leadership
Oversee the Finance Team in the day-to-day financial operations including payroll, accounts payable/receivable, bank and credit card reconciliations.
Review and approve payroll and AP runs, BAS/IAS lodgements, and other statutory filings.
Maintain and update the Fixed Asset Register and ensure appropriate capitalisation of assets.
Lead and support the finance team to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
Oversee billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, and cost accounting.
Ensure compliance with statutory laws, accounting standards, and financial regulations.
Provide leadership, mentoring, and development to the Finance Officer.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
Lead the month-end close process including balance sheet reconciliations, P&L analysis, and preparation of accruals, prepayments, and other journals.
Prepare and present monthly financial reports to management and the Board, including P&L, Balance Sheet, Reserves, and Funding Program Performance Reports.
Ensure compliance with AASB standards, ASIC, ACNC reporting requirements, and other regulatory obligations.
Analyse financial performance, identify trends, and provide insights to the COO and Executive.
Grant and Program Financial Management
Collaborate with program managers to ensure accurate grant allocations and tracking of expenses.
Prepare and present monthly P&L reports including Board reporting for each funding program, with commentary and variance analysis.
Prepare acquittals and financial reports for funding providers, ensuring compliance with grant conditions.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process in collaboration with program managers and COO.
Manage cash flow and prepare forecasts to track grant receipts and payment schedules.
Monitor financial performance and provide strategic insights to support decision-making.
Support organisational planning through scenario modelling and financial projections.
Audit & Governance
Manage relationships with external auditors and oversee annual audit processes.
Review year-end General Purpose Financial Statements prepared by external auditors.
Maintain strong financial internal controls and risk management processes.
Review and implement financial policies and procedures to strengthen governance.
Prepare Board Finance and Risk Committee reports and papers.
Qualifications and Experience
CPA/CA qualified with at least 10 years’ post-qualification experience.
Demonstrated experience managing financial operations in a complex or NFP environment.
Strong technical knowledge of accounting standards, audit, and compliance requirements.
Proven leadership experience, with ability to mentor and develop team members.
High-level analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to influence and contribute to executive decision-making.
Key Performance Indicators
Accuracy and timeliness of monthly and annual financial reports.
Budget variance management within agreed tolerances.
Completion of annual audit with no significant findings.
Compliance with statutory and funding body requirements.
Cashflow maintained within agreed liquidity thresholds.
Finance Officer performance and development outcomes.
Conditions of Employment
Must be eligible to work in Australia
Position is based in Canberra, primarily working from an office location
Undertaking a police check
Willingness and ability to travel as required
