About the Role

We are looking for an Indigenous Collections Researcher to join the ABC Archives team.

This role plays a vital part in recognising, protecting, and sharing Indigenous cultural content within our archive.

The Job

As the Indigenous Collections Researcher, you will:

  • Research and find Indigenous content in the ABC Archives, such as footage, audio recordings, or images.
  • Ensure Indigenous stories and cultural materials are treated with respect and protected properly.
  • Update ABC Archive catalogue records.
  • Work closely with ABC content makers to help include the right Indigenous materials in programs and stories.
  • Help Indigenous communities reconnect with their kin and culture by making it easier to access and use materials in the archives through the Kin-nect program.

What we can offer you:

  • 15.4% ABC Nominated Super
  • 1-day cultural leave for NAIDOC or NRW
  • Culturally supported secondment programs
  • ABC Mentoring
  • Parental Leave

The ABC's a great place to work; we provide various opportunities for Indigenous staff, including attending the national Indigenous staff conference, activities during NAIDOC week, regular networking events and mentoring support. You'll have a friendly and supportive environment to learn and grow in, with a vibrant, dynamic and cohesive team and a manager who will help you with any questions and give you regular opportunities to talk about your progress.

About You

You care deeply about the respectful handling, recognition, and sharing of Indigenous stories, knowledge, and culture. You bring lived experience and a strong understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, and you are committed to working in ways that are culturally safe, respectful, and community focused.

You may have studied Indigenous studies, archives, cultural heritage or a related area — or you may have gained your knowledge through experience working with collections, communities, or media. You’re confident engaging with a wide range of people, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities. You are skilled in using collection management systems, creating clear and accurate records, and working with a variety of media formats. You’re also comfortable researching, solving problems, managing your time, and working both independently and as part of a team.

Above all, you’re driven by a passion to surface, protect, and celebrate Indigenous content, and you value creating space for stories that reflect the diversity, resilience, and strength of Indigenous communities.
