The Agency:
This is a small Commonwealth agency with a national remit to manage and regulate the use of natural resources in a sustainable and efficient way. The organisation plays a critical role in protecting Australia’s interests, working closely with industry, government and international partners.

The role:
This is an opportunity for someone who’s ready to step into a senior leadership role and guide a small HR team through a period of rebuild and change. You’ll oversee a generalist HR team of 4–6 officers, as well as the payroll, property and internal communications functions.

The program of work is significant, but you’ll be working with executives who are realistic and supportive.

This is a permanent position and will be offered via a permanent transfer (for permanent APS staff members). Regular interstate travel is required.

Duties and priorities include:

• Lead and manage a small HR team delivering services across people, payroll and communications.
• Provide professional advice and solutions on workforce strategy, employment conditions, performance management, case management and rehabilitation, recruitment and workforce planning.
• Oversee the payroll function, embedding new processes and resolving transition issues in partnership with Finance.
• Modernise and streamline HR policies, procedures and forms to reduce complexity and improve usability.
• Build effective relationships with senior executives and collaborate across Finance, Legal, ICT and Property to deliver integrated corporate services.

The Right Person:
We are looking for a leader who is strategic, pragmatic and future focussed. To succeed in this role, you will bring:

• Demonstrated experience in HR leadership, performance management, payroll or workforce projects.
• A track record of simplifying complex processes and policies.
• The ability to embed and stabilise payroll and HR systems.
• Independence in decision-making, with a solutions-focused approach.
• Strong collaboration skills to engage peers, executives and staff.

This role will suit an EL2 with experience in smaller agencies, a substantive EL1 with extensive acting Director (EL2) experience, or an established private-sector HR leader with strong project, payroll and people leadership capability.
