About Galilee School

Galilee School is a registered, independent secondary school, designed specifically for disengaged and vulnerable young people in Years 7-12 in the ACT and the surrounding areas for whom the mainstream schooling environment has struggled to deliver positive outcomes. We operate two campuses in Canberra: one in Holder and another in Kambah.

About the Role

Galilee School seeks a suitably qualified professional to provide both universal support and activities tailored to specific identified needs of young people enrolled at Galilee School. Working closely with and as a member of the Student Support Team, the Community and Wellbeing Officer will plan for and deliver wellbeing initiatives, organise and facilitate social and emotional programs, contribute to school newsletters and communications, organise parenting education, facilitate community partnerships between the school and the wider community, and provide students and their families with support and appropriate referrals within the school or externally under the direction of the Head of Student Support and School Principal. The position supports student engagement in daily activities and studies, working closely with their Individual Learning and Positive Behaviour Support plans. We’re looking for candidates with strong qualifications and experience in working with young people and their families who can manage challenging situations with confidence.

This is a fixed term contract until 31st December 2027 with possibility of extension.

Your duties will include but are not limited to:

Act as a representative for the organisation at all times

Assist Youth Workers and Student Support Team staff in the delivery of student welfare services

Developing strategies in consultation with relevant school staff, the Head of Student Support and the school Principal that support the wellbeing of the broader school community

Provide students and their families with support and or appropriate referrals, in consultation with relevant members of the School’s Executive Team

Support students and staff to create an environment which promotes the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development and wellbeing of all students

Participate in the development, planning and implementation of the social and emotional curriculum and programs

Provide individualised support to young people attending Galilee School in alignment with the Student Support Framework

Where relevant, and in consultation with the Head of Student Support, participate in case conferences and meetings with students, families and other agencies

Support families to connect with the school and external services as needed

Participate in the process for the development of students’ Positive Behaviour Support Plans and implementing and reviewing the students’ Individual Learning Plans

Work proactively to support students to engage positively in the learning program and activities of the school

Under the direction of the Head of Student Support, work proactively to maximise young people’s attendance at the school

Maintain confidential records

Participate in Galilee School’s staff meetings, professional development days and other organisational meetings where required.

Assist in the transportation of students in support of their attendance at school as well as in support of the school’s academic and social and emotional program.

Comply with the NSWP ACT Program Guidelines

Other duties as directed within the scope of the role.

What We Need from You

Maintain current “Working With Vulnerable People” registration

Certificate IV or equivalent qualification and experience. Qualifications must include competencies in mental health and making appropriate referrals and providing pastoral care, and/or working with youth

Meet the minimum professional development requirements being undertake a professional learning package in responding to and preventing cyberbullying delivered by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner within three months of commencing NSWP services and refresh this professional learning at least once every two and a half years

A passion and drive and demonstrated experience in working with vulnerable, “at-risk” and disadvantaged youth

Demonstrated experience and skills in conflict resolution and an ability to build influential and supportive relationships with young people and their families

Well-developed communication skills (both oral and written), including liaison, negotiation, motivational, case planning, reporting and the development and delivery of youth focussed programs

An understanding of the role of a young person’s Individual Learning Plan and how this is best supported by the role of the Youth Worker

The ability to understand and implement strategies agreed upon in a student’s Positive Behaviour Support Plan

Possess high level organisational, planning and time management skills

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of close team

The ability to participate in physical demonstration of tasks and physical activities as well as exposure to environments and varying terrains

Willingness to adhere to, and work within, the strategic vision, direction, and philosophy of Communities at Work Galilee School

Relevant qualifications and experience in working with young people and families and mental health and wellbeing

Current driver’s license and be able to drive vehicles with both manual and automatic transmissions

Mental Health First Aid Training (or able to obtain)

Desirable

Understanding and experience in trauma informed practice

Understanding and experience in restorative practice

Training and experience in facilitating relevant programs
