The role
At the heart of this role is the opportunity to shape and lead the creation of meaningful and engaging First Nations learning experiences across the stunning sites of the Botanic Gardens of Sydney. You’ll design innovative programs that connect people of all ages with First Nations knowledges, cultures, and histories while aligning with curriculum and strategic goals. It’s a hands-on role where you’ll guide and support team members, build partnerships, and bring creative energy to program development and delivery.

You’ll also manage day-to-day operations – from rostering staff and overseeing budgets to working with schools, community groups, and industry partners. The challenge lies in balancing the coordination of a dispersed casual team, embedding cultural integrity, and developing programs that are inclusive, relevant, and of consistently high quality.

What you will bring to the role

  • Experience in developing and delivering high-quality, innovative education programs tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Understanding of the formal education sector, informal learning, tourism industry, and curriculum requirements.
  • Leadership experience, excelling in supervisory roles and guiding teams to success.
  • Strong connection to the community and experience engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal cultures and histories, enriching educational content.
  • Proven track record in developing and delivering education programs, ideally in cultural institutions or environmental education settings.
  • Ability to connect with the community, engage diverse audiences, and deliver impactful education programs.

What is an essential requirement:

  • This is an Identified role under the Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 and as such Aboriginality is an essential requirement of the role. Aboriginal identified positions are developed where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977) for Aboriginal people who can provide evidence that they meet the following criteria:
  • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
  • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and
  • is accepted as a such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.
  • A current Working with Children Check (WWCC) is an essential requirement for this role. The role has been identified as requiring this check in line with the Child Protection (Working With Children) Act 2012.
