Seaweed Scientist Wanted! Come and bring your passion and expertise!
At The Cawthron Institute, our scientists are tackling critical challenges facing New Zealand to create a better future for Aotearoa’s oceans, rivers, and lakes, and you could be part of that mission.
We are looking for a Seaweed Scientist to join our Algae Team in our Aquaculture Group. This role is perfect for someone with a strong background in seaweed aquaculture or marine biology who thrives on practical, hands-on science and wants their work to make a real-world impact.
If you’re passionate about sustainable aquaculture, ecosystem restoration, and science that supports thriving communities, then this is the opportunity for you.
The Role:
In this Fixed-Term 18 Months Seaweed Scientist role, you’ll be working on applied research and commercial projects focused on seaweed cultivation. Your work will span laboratory experiments, fieldwork, aquatic organism care, and development of new methods to improve seaweed production including species like fucoids, kelps, and red/green algae.
You’ll be part of a collaborative team contributing to innovation in the seaweed industry, both nationally and globally.
Why this role is for you:
You have a passion for the marine environment and want to turn that into impact.
You enjoy balancing practical, hands-on work with rigorous scientific investigation.
You’re excited by research that supports sustainable aquaculture and biodiversity.
You value teamwork, adaptability, and contributing to solutions that benefit both the environment and people.
You want to work where science, innovation, and mātauranga Māori come together to create change.
What you'll bring:
A PhD (or equivalent experience) in marine science, biology, ecology, or botany.
5+ years of experience in technical or scientific roles either academic or applied.
Experience in seaweed aquaculture, aquatic animal husbandry, or working in aquaculture systems.
Strong practical lab and field skills, including sampling, microscopy, and data recording.
Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Excellent organisational, documentation, and communication skills.
Familiarity with scientific writing, reporting, and working with commercial clients.
Physically fit, able to repetitively lift/carry up to 20 kg.
A current driver's licence and a commitment to safe, responsible fieldwork.
Respect for Te Ao Māori and a willingness to incorporate mātauranga Māori into your work.
Why Cawthron?

You’ll join a purpose-led organisation based in sunny Nelson, one of New Zealand’s most beautiful regions, offering the perfect blend of lifestyle, science, and community.
You’ll work alongside your passionate colleagues in a supportive environment that values creativity, collaboration, and equity. Whether you’re restoring ecosystems, improving aquaculture methods, or driving innovation, your work will make a real difference.
