About the role:
The WHS and Risk Management Officer is responsible for fostering a strong and proactive safety culture across the Council. The role provides specialist advice, guidance, and support to ensure compliance with WHS legislation, Council policies, and industry best practice. Working closely with depot staff, leaders, and contractors, the WHS and Risk Management Officer will embed safe systems of work, promote risk awareness, and build capability at all levels to create a workplace where safety is understood, valued, and consistently applied. The position plays a key role in engaging employees in positive safety behaviours, driving continuous improvement in WHS performance, and ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for all.
Key Responsibilities of the role include:
Reporting to Team Leader WHS & Risk Management, responsibilities of this role include:
Assist in developing, implementing, and reviewing Council's WHS and Injury Management programs.
Ensure staff are informed of and comply with WHS and Risk Management policies, procedures, and processes.
Deliver WHS inductions, training, and targeted safety initiatives.
Act as back up Internal Return to Work Coordinator (IRC) to support effective and timely return to work outcomes.
Attend worksites to monitor compliance with WHS legislation and Council policies and procedures.
Oversee compliance activities, including risk assessments, inspections, and field audits.
The ideal candidate will have:
To be successful in this role you will have:
Driver’s License (essential)
White Card (essential)
Certificate IV in Work health and Safety or demonstrated commitment to enrol upon commencement (essential)
Tertiary qualification in Risk Management (desirable)
Demonstrated experience in a related role including roles such as WHS representative, safety officer or similar.
Experience in identifying and implementing systems and continuous improvement opportunities, documenting processes and procedure.
Knowledge of organisational risk management programs, strategies, principles, practices and initiatives.

The position is offered as a Full-time, ongoing contract at General Officer Level 5 in accordance with the South Australian Municipal Salaried Officers Award and Council’s current Enterprise Agreement within an annual salary range of $100,313 to $104,731 dependent upon skills, knowledge and experience.
