ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIAN MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTES
Founded in 1993, the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) is the peak body representing medical research institutes across Australia. Our mission is to achieve positive policy outcomes for our member institutes—and Australian health and medical research more broadly—by undertaking advocacy activities, informing and influencing government policy, building networks, and representing member institutes in areas of shared concern. AAMRI plays a pivotal role in representing the interests of medical research organisations to Federal Parliamentarians and Government agencies.
AAMRI NSW
AAMRI NSW is the New South Wales state chapter of AAMRI and has 17 independent NSW medical research institutes as members. AAMRI NSW undertakes advocacy, promotes the sector, is a credible source of information, and drives projects that support and benefit our members.
WORKING AT AAMRI
AAMRI NSW is seeking a passionate and strategic Government Relations Lead to join our team and help advance the interests of our members across the NSW Government. This pivotal role will also complement AAMRI’s broader federal advocacy efforts.
We’re looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, and results-driven individual who can lead the development and implementation of our NSW advocacy plan for 2025–26 and beyond. You’ll be working closely with stakeholders, building strong relationships across government, and driving impactful policy outcomes that support medical research and innovation.
The role requires an excellent understanding of the machinery of NSW Government; strong interpersonal skills and well-developed project management skills; a good understanding of policy and policy advocacy; and a proven ability to deliver effective results in a timely manner.
This role will interact with several key parts of government, including the Office of Health and Medical Research (OHMR) and the Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) within NSW Health, as well as the wider NSW Health department, Investment NSW, Treasury and the Premier’s Department.
This role will work closely with strategy and government relations teams across all of NSW’s Medical Research Institutes . The role will work with the Executive Officer of AAMRI NSW and the AAMRI national office. These are small teams with a large advocacy remit.
This role is ideal for someone looking to transition out of government and into the private sector or not-for-profit sector, or for someone with experience in a similar role who is seeking a more strategic, self-directed position. It is an exciting opportunity to apply your government relations expertise to drive meaningful systems change in the health and medical research sector in NSW – for the benefit of patients today and into the future tomorrow.
THE POSITION
The Government Relations Lead’s key responsibilities include:
Proactively engaging with the State Government, Opposition and cross benchers on relevant public policy issues. That is, engaging impartially across the political landscape (bipartisan engagement).
Undertaking research and networking to identify opportunities to inform government policy on issues aligned with AAMRI NSW’s strategic objectives.
Developing and maintaining strong relationships with the key ministerial and parliamentary offices at the State level, as well as with senior departmental officers.
Initiating and managing a NSW Parliamentary Friends of Medical Research event series, and other engagement opportunities such as roundtables, policy forums, and site visits.
Working with AAMRI’s member institutes to create, coordinate, and amplify the agreed AAMRI NSW advocacy plan.
Advising AAMRI NSW member institutes on the development and executions of their own advocacy programs and plans.
Engaging with stakeholders relevant to government relations , including, but not limited to, pharmaceutical companies, consumer groups, regulatory agencies and other peak bodies.
Identifying and mapping stakeholders and maintaining a database of key contacts and engagement records.
Coordinating and supporting the development of key submissions and responses to government inquiries, reviews and policy proposals.
Supporting media and communications activities that align with government relations and advocacy objectives.
Collaborating with AAMRI NSW’s Collaboration Office to ensure cohesive messaging and to further AAMRI NSW’s strategy.
Coordinating with AAMRI National’s communications and policy teams to ensure alignment and consistency with AAMRI’s national advocacy strategy.
The AAMRI NSW team combines work-from-home and office-based work practices. The position will work remotely, with occasional meetings in Darlinghurst. Therefore, this role is best suited to a Sydney-based candidate.
