
Senior Flood Modelling Specialist - Contract

Part time, 9 Month contract – working 3 days a week, seeking an experience Flood Modelling Specialist to provide technical advice on hydrologic and hydraulic modelling to support Council’s projects, flood studies, flood risk management plans and development assessments.
Accountabilities
• Lead and undertake hydrologic and hydraulic modelling (e.g., TUFLOW) to support flood studies and capital works investigations.
• Provide specialist advice on flood modelling inputs, methodologies and results interpretation.
• Review and assess consultant modelling reports to ensure compliance with industry standards and Council’s requirements.
• Support the preparation of Floodplain Risk Management Studies and Plans (FRMSPs), including scenario testing and mitigation option assessment.
• Prepare high-quality maps, figures, and technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
• Assist the development assessment team by reviewing flood impact assessments, overland flow studies, and advising on flood-related DA conditions.
• Build internal modelling capability by mentoring other engineers and providing training in flood modelling.
• Contribute to community and stakeholder engagement by presenting technical findings in an accessible and understandable manner.
• Provide guidance and assistance to the other team members as required.
• Other tasks as required by Team Leader Asset Planning – Stormwater
Essential Qualifications
• Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or related discipline
• Class C Drivers Licence
Essential Experience
• Extensive experience in flood modelling using industry standard software
• Strong understanding of Australian Rainfall & Runoff (ARR2019) and NSW Flood Risk Management Manual.
• Demonstrated ability to review, interpret, and communicate complex technical results to a range of audiences.
• Proven experience in preparing and reviewing flood studies and flood risk management plans.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and engage with consultants, government agencies, and the community.
Desirable Qualifications and or Experience
• Postgraduate qualifications in water engineering, hydrology or floodplain management.
• GIS skills (MapInfo & QGIS) for interrogation and presentation of model outputs.
• Knowledge of local government processes, development assessment, and floodplain risk management frameworks.
