The Role

As an ASD4 and ASD5 Compartment Security Officers, you will work with a range of stakeholders, providing a high level of customer service to achieve outcomes for the Compartment Operations Team.

ASD4 Compartment Security Officer

  • Responsible for managing the Compartment Operations mailbox, which is the front door for whole-of-government access to and support of ASD Compartments.
  • Providing support to staff who have enquiries about, security briefings and debriefings, briefing certificates, compartment access and clearance certification for travel.
  • Providing verbal security briefings to staff.
  • Following procedures to answer enquiries and to understand common problems and offer solutions.
  • Escalating issues when an enquiry or problem cannot be resolved to more senior, support officers, who have deeper understanding of the policies, processes and procedures, communicating all relevant information about the issue to ensure a smooth handover.
  • Providing basic training to staff to help them understand how to use Compartment Security information and services more effectively.
  • Keeping staff informed about the status of their support requests and providing updates on the progress of issue resolution and estimated timeframes for resolution.

ASD5 Compartment Security Officer

  • Responsible for managing the Compartment Operations mailbox, which is the front door for whole-of-government access to and support of ASD Compartments.
  • Providing support to staff who have enquiries about, security briefings and debriefings, briefing certificates, compartment access and clearance certification for travel.
  • Providing verbal security briefings to staff.
  • Following and helping to document procedures and knowledge base articles to answer enquiries and to understand common problems and offer solutions.
  • Maintaining comprehensive records of user interactions and support requests and documenting troubleshooting steps, issue resolutions, and any relevant information to ensure transparency and auditability.
  • Escalating issues when an enquiry or problem cannot be resolved to more senior, support officers, who have deeper understanding of the policies, processes and procedures, communicating all relevant information about the issue to ensure a smooth handover.
  • Providing advanced training to staff to help them understand how to use access Compartment Security information and services more effectively.
  • Keeping users informed about the status of their support requests and providing updates on the progress of issue resolution and estimated timeframes for resolution.

About our Team

The Compartment Security section provides administration services related to compartment briefings and certification of security clearances for travel related purposes. The section also trains and engages with the whole of government Communications Intelligence Security Officer (COMSO) network. The COMSO is the mandatory security link between ASD and their unit or agency. The COMSO is responsible for all aspects of protective security relating to communications intelligence (COMINT) material.

Our services include the co-ordination, review, approval and transfers of all briefings and justifications requests for security briefing compartments. We facilitate and present training programs for staff employed, posted or contracted to the Australian Signals Directorate or the Defence Intelligence Group.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Good understanding of security compartment briefings.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to provide clear and concise information when escalating problems to higher support tiers.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts in a clear and understandable manner, as well as empathy and patience when dealing with end-users who may be frustrated or unfamiliar with security terminology.
  • Detail-oriented approach to maintaining accurate records of support requests, troubleshooting steps, and issue resolutions and strong organisational skills to manage and prioritise support enquiries and work requests effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other support team members and escalate issues when necessary and efficient time management to handle multiple support requests simultaneously and meet response time targets.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new ways of working and support processes and a commitment to ongoing self-improvement and skill development.
  • Strong understanding of security best practices and the importance of safeguarding sensitive data and access credentials.
  • Demonstrates an analytical approach to work.
  • Delivers high levels of customer engagement and satisfaction.
  • Possesses comprehensive records keeping practices.
  • ASD 5 role serves as an escalation point for higher support officers, providing guidance and assistance when issues cannot be resolved at first point of contact as well as the skill in determining when escalation is the appropriate path of action.
