The Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service (DYHS) was established in 1974 and is the largest Aboriginal community-controlled health service provider in Western Australia, providing care to over 20,000 Aboriginal patients across four clinics in East Perth, Mirrabooka, Maddington and Midland. Our staff enable the delivery of culturally responsive primary health services, focusing on prevention, early intervention, comprehensive care and care coordination including chronic disease management.

About the Position

The Finance Officer is a dynamic and pivotal role that will report to and be directly accountable to the Finance Manager. The Finance Officer will support the organization to improve performance, solve problems, and communicate the financial impact of transactions and events as they relate to Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service.

Key Responsibilities

The Finance Officer will oversee the following functions:

  • Assist with invoicing, receipting payments, and monitoring outstanding accounts.
  • Perform bank reconciliations.
  • Assist in reconciling accounts receivable and other ledger balances.
  • Assist with travel bookings for staff (flights, accommodation, related reimbursements).
  • Maintain accurate financial records, filing systems, and registers (asset register, supplier details).
  • Provide support to the Accounts Payable Officer as required.
  • Assist with invoice processing, payment runs, and supplier queries during peak periods or staff absences.
  • Provide support to the Payroll Officer as required.
  • Assist with data entry and payroll administration tasks when needed.
  • Responding to internal and external queries related to the role performed.
  • Support the Finance Manager with month-end processes.
  • Assist in preparing routine finance reports and data for management.
  • Ensure financial processes comply with organisational policy, funding body requirements, and legislation.
  • Contribute to audit preparation and provide supporting documentation.
  • Undertake other ad hoc finance and administrative tasks as directed by the Finance Manager or CFO.

Selection Criteria

1. Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree within the discipline of Commerce, Finance and/or Accounting.

2. Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and manage accounts payable, payroll, salary packaging and FBT implications.
  • Advanced computer literacy skills and competence in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Outlook, Excel and accounting software principles.
  • Proven ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience in providing appropriate and timely reports and meeting deadlines.
  • Understanding of and ability to operate within policy and frameworks, particularly in relation to workplace health and safety, and equal employment opportunity.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of XERO and other accounting software.
  • High degree of ethics and confidentiality.

3. Desirable:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Understanding of working with the context of an Aboriginal Health Service.

4. Other Requirements:

  • Satisfactory National Police Clearance that is not older than 6 months.
  • Valid WA Drivers’ License and willingness to travel as required.
  • Successful Pre-Employment Health Assessment.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and training.

About Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service

Midland, WA, Australia

Princess Margaret Hospital held monthly clinics at the Aboriginal Advancement Council to provide immunisations and paediatric medical treatment. Princess Margaret Hospital supported the service as they recognised that our young Koolunga needed more follow up care. The monthly clinics increased from monthly to fortnightly and then weekly. Doctors and nurses from Princess Margaret Hospital also visited Allawah Grove Noongar Camp on the fringes of the metro area.

From this initial activity the seed was thus planted recognising that more health and medical support was desperately needed for all Aboriginal people not just the young. Princess Margaret Hospital should be recognised and acknowledged for the services they provided to Aboriginal families in the late 60's - early 70s.

The seed that was planted grew within the Noongar community and as a priority the next phase of the journey began. The word spread to the Noongar people and they formed the New Era Aboriginal Fellowship (NEAF) Committee - this Committee was inspirational in lobbying for contributions and community support to allow an independent, dedicated facility to be established where extended health care could be provided to those in need.
