Senator Tammy Tyrrell

Independent Senator for Tasmania

Applications are invited for the ongoing position of Media and Public Relations Advisor in the Office of Senator Tammy Tyrrell based in her Electorate Office in Launceston, Tasmania.

The Rundown:

Are you a creative communicator who loves turning ideas into engaging stories? Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment where collaboration, community connection, and clever content come together?

Senator Tyrrell is looking for a Media and Public Relations Advisor who can roll up their sleeves, dive into all things community engagement, and whip up content that’s strategic, clear, and dare we say it, actually enjoyable to read.

You’ll work closely with a small team to craft compelling narratives that inform, inspire, and connect with the Tasmanian community. If you’re ready to bring purpose, and a touch of fun to your work, we’d love to hear from you.

The Nitty Gritty (key duties but don’t hold back, this doesn’t limit you):

· Play an important role in building Senator Tyrrell’s profile and brand. You’ll proactively identify and lead media relations, including drafting media releases, pitching stories, coordinating interviews, and preparing press materials.

· Assist to get the message right the first time. You’ll help prepare speeches, newsletters or any other written communication that is consistent with Senator Tyrrell’s legislative position.

· Be the calm voice when media calls and something’s on fire (metaphorically we hope) and can build and maintain relationships with local and national journalists.

· Active media monitoring of local, national and international news across traditional and new media platforms, in order to offer written and verbal briefings to Senator Tyrrell and her team on matters being discussed in news and in Parliament.

The things that make you shine (ideal skills and experience):

· You’ve got a comms or journalism background - or just loads of practical experience managing media relations or doing this stuff really well.

· You can juggle and meet multiple deadlines under high pressure and have a laugh while doing it.

· Goes without saying, outstanding written and verbal communication skills across multiple formats. You’ll be turning complex political-speak into plain, warm, community-friendly language. You know how to write for real humans without putting them to sleep, to inform, engage, and (every so often) delight.

· Creative and collaborative, service-led approach to your work.

Bonus points if you have a working knowledge of the Australian parliamentary and political system, legislative frameworks or practice and procedure of the Australian Senate.

What you really want to know, what’s in it for you (Employment Conditions):

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27 which include:

· A commencing salary between $74,095 and $86,506 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.

· This isn’t your regular 9 to 5 gig, and an additional allowance will be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work.

· The above salary and allowance are subject to a pay increase effective from 5 August 2025.

· Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).

· Flexibility, within reason - we get that life exists outside of politics.

· An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

Applicants should note the following:

· An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.

· The successful applicant will be required to undergo a National Police History Check.

· Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.

· Interstate and intrastate travel will be required to support the Senator’s engagement.

· The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.

This is how to apply:

If this sounds like your kind of thing, a place where your wit, and work ethic will be put to good use, then forward your application to [email protected] including:

· A CV with the names of two referees.

· A covering letter of no more than two pages that addresses your interest in the position, and the key skills and experience required for the role.

· An example of relevant written work if available.

We acknowledge the value that diversity brings. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace that ensures all our people can contribute to our shared purpose. We welcome applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, mature age people, people from diverse backgrounds, LGBTIQA+ and people with a disability.

Applications close on Wednesday 1st October 2025, noting that interviews may be conducted before the closing date.
