Your opportunity
Mission Australia is seeking a passionate Community Development Worker to empower individuals, families and communities through meaningful, participant-centred support.

In this role, you will co-design activities and programs alongside residents, facilitate opportunities for inclusion, and provide outreach services across both regional and remote areas. Drawing on your initiative, specialist knowledge and strong cultural awareness, you will help participants identify and achieve their goals, build sustainable connections, and strengthen pathways towards independence. This is a chance to make a lasting impact while contributing to innovative, community-led approaches that create real change.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Co-design and deliver community programs, working alongside residents to create meaningful activities, events and visiting services that reflect their needs and aspirations.
  • Empower participants by supporting individuals and families to identify their goals, build confidence, and develop the skills to transition towards independence.
  • Facilitate groups and activities that engage adults, families and children in inclusive programs that strengthen community connection and participation.
  • Provide outreach services in regional and remote areas to ensure equitable access to services and opportunities.
  • Build strong stakeholder relationships by collaborating with community organisations, service providers, government agencies and local networks to enhance outcomes for participants.
  • Mentor and guide staff through supervision, coaching and support to employees at lower levels, fostering capability and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure quality service delivery by managing reporting, compliance and administrative requirements while promoting a safe, child-safe and culturally responsive environment.

Requirements for success

  • Relevant degree, diploma or equivalent experience, with at least 12 months of experience providing intake, assessment and support to participants with complex needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to co-design, coordinate and facilitate community development activities and group programs.
  • Knowledge and experience working with a diverse range of participants, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and an understanding of cultural systems and protocols.
  • Strong engagement and listening skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with participants and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working within a child-safe framework and applying statutory requirements relevant to the service.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, including administrative skills and the ability to manage complex reporting and documentation.
  • A positive, person-centred approach, with the capacity to exercise initiative, sound judgment, and apply specialist knowledge to achieve high-quality outcomes.

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.

Your benefits

  • Rewarding work - every day you know you're making a real difference
  • Not-for-profit salary packaging, reducing your tax (details via AccessPay)
  • Free external, confidential counselling and access to chaplaincy support
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Opportunity to purchase additional annual leave
  • Extra leave including: Mission Australia Thank You Day & Work Anniversary Day off
