National Apprentice Employment Network (NAEN) has been contracted by the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) to engage Aboriginal young people aged 15-19 residing in the Mparntwe / Alice Springs Town Camps to support pathways into employment. The project is funded through NIAA’s Indigenous Skills and Employment Program and is delivered in partnership with our member organisation GTNT Group.
Position Objectives
The Community Engagement Officer will promote the Indigenous Skills and Employment Program within the community, engaging with young people seeking employment and potential employers. The position will be responsible for organising and delivering community events across Town Camps as well as supporting program participants to take part in work readiness and foundation skills training programs. The Community Engagement Officer will work as part of a small team.
Key responsibilities
Engagement
Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop culturally appropriate strategies for engaging with Indigenous youth
Plan, organise and execute community engagement events within the Mparntwe / Alice Springs Town Camps
Build relationships with community members, families and local organisations to increase Program awareness and participation
Assist in the recruitment and selection of Program participants from the target demographic
Provide support and assistance to Program participants during community events and workshops
Collect feedback and maintain accurate records to support Program reporting and continuous improvement
Work Readiness and Foundation Skills training
Work with partner training providers to establish training sessions, workshops and other educational activities for Program participants and employers
Coordinate attendance of program participants at relevant programs
Support participants to successfully engage in relevant programs as required
Employment
In partnership with GTNT Group staff, identify relevant employment opportunities for program participants
Provide post-placement support for participants and employers under the Program
Counsel participants on work habits and matters relating to their training, welfare and employment conditions
Investigate and resolve any workplace issues or conflict that may affect retention in employment for Program participants
Support employers to build capacity to provide culturally safe workplaces for Aboriginal staff
Selection criteria
Essential
Must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
Demonstrated ability to communicate and liaise with a diverse client group including young Aboriginal people, employers and other stakeholders
Commitment to achieving high quality employment outcomes for program participants
High level of motivation, enthusiasm and initiative
Ability to work efficiently as a member of a small team and independently in a client focused role
Ability to be systematic in approach to work, comply with relevant guidelines, procedures and deadlines
The capacity to meet tight deadlines, conflicting priorities and heavy workloads
Competent digital and technology skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email, and social media. Reporting in the NIAA’s DEX platform will be required
Demonstrated ability and preparedness to travel throughout NT regional areas for extended periods if required
Understanding of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Work Health and Safety (WHS) principles
Current Working with Children clearance (Ochre Card) or willingness to obtain
Current National Police Clearance or willingness to obtain
Current driver’s licence
Desirable
Relevant tertiary qualifications
Previous experience delivering successful youth employment programs
Defensive driving and 4WD training
