What is the role?

Applications are sought from applicants wishing to be considered for the role of a ICT Business Analyst to elicit, understand and document business processes and requirements for new and changing ICT systems, and help bridge the gap between customer expectations, design and delivery teams.

The role will provide expert advice and assistance to system users, investigate complex issues, determine business impact and recommend solutions as part of the technical team. You will be working for one of multiple scrum teams within the Enterprise Policing Systems branch. Each scrum team is a multi-disciplinary ICT team driven to deliver and bring value to business users as well as continuously improve the way we work.

As a Team Member in the AFP you will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

Band 7

Your duties will include:

  • Work collaboratively with business and technical stakeholders to identify their needs, reach agreement on the objectives and gain commitment to achieving results.
  • Analyse complex ICT business issues, applying expertise to identify and recommend courses of action.
  • Assess, evaluate and document ICT business improvement processes, strategies, initiatives, policies and user guidelines.
  • Elicit and prioritise requirements; maintain product backlog; develop user stories and acceptance criteria; develop use cases and map processes.
  • Validate and ensure that deliverables meet business requirements.
  • Establish and maintain effective business relationships and professional networks.
  • Contribute to and implement improved ICT practices and procedures.
  • Provide mentoring and training as well as deliver presentations.

Band 8

Your duties will include:

  • Work collaboratively with business and technical stakeholders to identify their needs, reach agreement on the objectives and gain commitment to achieving results.
  • Work with Product Manager/Owners and Architects to get a holistic view of existing work items and solution designs to understand and identify the interdependencies and priorities.
  • Analyse complex ICT business issues, applying expertise to identify and recommend courses of action.
  • Assess, evaluate and document ICT business improvement processes, strategies, initiatives, policies and user guidelines.
  • Elicit and prioritise requirements; maintain product backlog; develop user stories and acceptance criteria; develop use cases and map processes.
  • Validate and ensure that deliverables meet business requirements.
  • Establish and maintain effective business relationships and professional networks.
  • Contribute to and implement improved ICT practices and procedures.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching and training as well as deliver presentations and facilitate workshops.
Essential Requirements

Band 7 only:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the ICT sector as a Business Analyst or an ICT role closely related to a Business Analyst demonstrating the abilities to perform as a Business Analyst.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with business and technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with mentoring.

Band 8 only:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the ICT sector as a Business Analyst or an ICT role closely related to a Business Analyst demonstrating the abilities to perform as a Business Analyst.
  • Ability to cultivate working relationships, working collaboratively with Product Owners, Architects and relevant stakeholders to align requirements and solution designs with existing capabilities, architecture patterns and the AFP’s strategic vision.
  • Experience with mentoring and/or coaching.

Band 7 & 8:

  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • IT qualifications and/or experience working in the ICT sector.
  • System and data analysis skills and experience.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in eliciting, documenting and managing requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria and system specifications.
  • Experience in facilitating workshops, delivering presentations and/or provide training.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments.
  • Ability to identify and address business and technological challenges and risks.
  • Ability to identify improvement opportunities and apply and lead best practices on business analysis and documentation
Desirable Requirements

Band 7 & 8

The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:

  • Experience with working in an agile environment and within a scrum team.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in performing other duties that assists the team to delivery (e.g. testing, test writing, development, deployment, etc.).
Additional Information
  • When applying you will be asked to nominate your preferred band level, however final determination of the band level you are found suitable for is at the discretion of the panel.
  • This role is located in Canberra, however remote working options may be negotiated.
  • This role is an AFP Band level 7 and 8.
