Your opportunity
Mission Australia is seeking a dedicated Dual Diagnosis Officer (AOD and Mental Health) to provide specialist support to individuals and families experiencing co-occurring mental health and alcohol or other drug challenges.

Working across multiple programs and sites, this role is integral in supporting case managers to deliver safe, timely, and integrated responses. The successful candidate will conduct comprehensive assessments, develop person-centred care plans, and coordinate holistic support using trauma-informed, culturally responsive approaches.

This position also involves secondary consultation, advocacy, and collaboration with external agencies to enhance outcomes for people with complex needs, while strengthening stakeholder relationships and advancing service delivery excellence.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Conduct comprehensive, culturally safe assessments for individuals with co-occurring mental health and AOD challenges using recognised dual diagnosis tools.
  • Develop and oversee integrated, recovery-oriented care plans addressing mental health, substance use, and psychosocial needs.
  • Provide specialised, person-centred case management, including outreach and support for complex participants, while assisting case managers in dual diagnosis-related work.
  • Offer secondary consultation, mentoring, and coaching to staff to build capacity in recognising and responding to complex AOD and mental health needs.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders, including service providers and community agencies, to ensure coordinated and holistic support.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive client records, reports, and data in line with organisational protocols and accreditation standards.
  • Actively contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives, including the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs, resources, and training.

Requirements for success

  • Relevant degree or equivalent experience in human services, social work, mental health, or AOD, with demonstrated expertise in dual diagnosis.
  • Strong knowledge of co-occurring mental health and AOD issues, including trauma, social determinants, treatment models, and relevant NT legislation.
  • Experience delivering person-centred, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care, including working with First Nations communities.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across multi-site, high-demand programs and build trusted relationships with participants, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated capacity to mentor, coach, and upskill staff to improve recognition and response to complex mental health and substance use needs.
  • Excellent communication, engagement, and organisational skills, including clear written reporting and data management.
  • Resilience, self-awareness, and professionalism, with the ability to manage workload, maintain boundaries, and contribute positively to team culture.

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.

Your benefits

  • Rewarding work - every day you know you're making a real difference
  • Not-for-profit salary packaging, reducing your tax (details via AccessPay)
  • Free external, confidential counselling and access to chaplaincy support
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Opportunity to purchase additional annual leave
  • Extra leave including: Mission Australia Thank You Day & Work Anniversary Day off
