About the role

The Community and City Services Division puts people, families and community at the heart of everything we do, ensuring Melbourne remains a city for all – liveable, healthy and vibrant, and meeting the needs of a diverse and growing population.

Within this division, the Libraries, Recreation and Waterways Branch offers inclusive spaces, resources, services and programs that connect communities, support creative and learning opportunities, and inspire healthier, more active lifestyles.

This is an opportunity to make your mark as Team Leader of one of Melbourne’s most vibrant community hubs. Southbank Library at Boyd is a place where people connect, learn, create and feel at home — and we’re looking for a dynamic leader to keep it thriving.

In this hands-on leadership role, you’ll guide a passionate team to deliver exceptional customer experiences, keep the library running smoothly day-to-day, and ensure it’s a safe, welcoming and inspiring space for all. You’ll manage facilities, collections, IT systems and tenant relationships, while also contributing to long-term planning and service improvements across our library network.

As part of our Library Leadership Team, you’ll blend operational know-how with strategic vision, shaping policies, driving innovation, and championing the role of libraries in a liveable, creative and connected Melbourne.

Join us and lead a library that’s more than books — it’s a heartbeat of the community

A little more about the role

Leading, guiding and managing the team to foster a performance based culture and drive accountability and excellence in outcomes through coaching, mentoring and empowering team members and direct reports to develop and perform at a high level, and as an effective team.

Overseeing daily branch operations, including staff rostering, financial procedures, customer service delivery, and resolution of complex customer service issues.

Building and sustaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including tenants, community organisations, and service providers

Leading safety initiatives across the library service, including coordinating OHS inspections, Health and Safety Representative meetings, procurement of safety equipment, and regular review of incident and emergency procedures.

Why join Team Melbourne?

Located on the traditional lands of the Bunurong Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation, Melbourne is globally recognised as one of the most liveable, diverse, and dynamic cities.

At the heart of it all is the City of Melbourne – a passionate, purpose-driven organisation where your work truly matters. As part of Team Melbourne, you’ll help deliver what’s most important to the people who live, work, study, visit and invest in our great city.

We’re proud champions of diversity, committed to continuous improvement, and driven by a shared vision for a vibrant and sustainable future.

This is more than just a role – it’s your chance to make a real impact, contribute to something bigger, and shape Melbourne’s future alongside a collaborative and forward-thinking team.
