This role is available across all states in Australia with hybrid/remote working arrangements. Part time work arrangements will also be considered. This is a fixed term contract for 24 months with potential for extension.
About the Organisation
The Office of the Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia (OSECI) plays a key role in supporting the Australian Government’s efforts to address and counter Islamophobia. It's work is focused on advancing community trust, promoting cultural responsiveness, and delivering targeted initiatives that challenge stereotypes and foster inclusion. By building community resilience and responding to Islamophobic incidents, OSECI provides vital input to policy, advocacy, and public engagement.
About the Job
The Communications Manager will lead the development and delivery of OSECI’s long-term communication strategy, shaping national campaigns, policy advocacy, and proactive media engagement to combat Islamophobia. This senior role will oversee storytelling initiatives, create high-impact content, and build collaborations with media outlets, tech companies, and social platforms to challenge harmful narratives and promote accurate representation of Muslim communities. The Communications Manager will also provide leadership on issues management, guide internal and external communications, and ensure reports and publications meet the Office’s high standards. Working closely with the Media Monitoring and Response Officer, the role is pivotal in articulating OSECI’s mission, strengthening community trust, and driving systemic change.
Key areas of focus include:
Develop and implement OSECI’s strategic communications plan with clear short, medium, and long-term goals
Lead proactive media engagement, including issues management, media training, and stakeholder relationship management
Design and deliver national campaigns to raise awareness of Islamophobia and promote community resilience
Build partnerships with tech companies, media outlets, and social platforms to challenge online hate speech and improve representation of Muslim communities
Commission and oversee content creation, including op-eds, podcasts, newsletters, reports, and community storytelling initiatives
Oversee evaluation and reporting processes, ensure alignment with the Media Monitoring and Response Officer, and represent the Office in forums, roundtables, and public engagements

Required Skills and Experience
To be considered, you must:
Be an Australian citizen.
Hold or have the ability to obtain a baseline clearance.
Essential qualifications and skills:
Tertiary qualifications in Media, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or related fields
At least 10 years’ experience in communications leadership roles
Demonstrated expertise in strategic communications planning, policy advocacy, and issues management
Strong experience working with diverse stakeholders and building relationships in complex environments
Knowledge of media production tools and processes
Budget management experience
Desirable:
Experience in human rights or anti-discrimination advocacy
Prior experience producing podcasts, videos, or multimedia content
Research experience (qualitative and quantitative)
