About the role and team
G4S manages Nominated Police Gaols (NPG's) on behalf of Victoria Police including the Melbourne Custody Centre (MCC) which serves as the main custody reception centre for people who have been arrested and are required to attend Court. In addition to the MCC, we currently operate NPG's in Moorabbin, Ringwood, Collingwood, Dandenong and Bendigo.
We are currently looking for a full-time Custody Officer to join our team at the Bendigo Law Courts. Training for the role will commence in October 2025. You will work a Monday to Friday 8-hour shift pattern schedule within the operating hours of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
In this role, you will:
- Ensure the safety and welfare of people in custody including adults and children
- Manage and escort people in custody through the facility and to their court hearings
- Use various systems like the Victoria Police LAN, LEAP and Custody Module systems
- Operate the control room and ensure the safe and secure operation of the Police Gaol
- Report on incidents, occupational health and safety, risk mitigations and intelligence
- Deal with visitors, contractors, Victoria Police and other stakeholders
- Ensure all tasks are completed in accordance with Assignment Orders and Operational Instructions
What we're looking for
As a Custody Officer working alongside people in challenging situations, a great deal of resilience, maturity, compassion and empathy is required to promote positive engagement with people detained in custody and diffuse and manage conflict that may occur. It is imperative that people are made to feel safe and supported whilst in our care.
You'll need to have:
- The ability to achieve a clearance through a criminal record check (including fingerprints)
- Willing to be flexible with regard to start and finish times, working reasonable additional overtime and at times completing duties at other G4S operated locations
- A current Victorian Working With Children's Check or be willing to obtain this
- A current driver's licence
Must be available to attend 2 weeks of full-time training in Melbourne
