Renrow Steel and Fabrication is looking for a new Workshop Manager for the first time in 10 years.

The role:

Being a good workshop manager at Renrow Steel & Fab requires a variety of skills. You need to be an organised and consistent leader, a process-driven thinker who can understand the production line, someone motivated by financial success to controls the numbers, an effective communicator and listener, and a motivated teammate to work alongside. All of these skills take balance and experience, and the person we’re looking for is either well on their way to achieving them, or they're already certain they have what it takes.

The fabrication of quality structural steel and metalwork is the core of the business. Over the past 10 years, we’ve spent a lot of time learning and implementing processes and systems to support our fabrication and business goals. Our workshop is backed by our team of estimators, draftspeople, project managers, the workshop foreman and leading hands, finance and HR experts and support staff, as well as our extensive network of external consultants. Delivering the quantity of product we do each year takes the effort of a whole team, and the role of the Workshop Manager is pivotal to achieving those goals.

We understand that someone who will do well in this role may have business or ownership aspirations of their own. For this reason, the role is offered as a paid salary to begin with, with a pathway toward profit share or equity ownership opportunities in the future.

The role is based at our West Wyalong workshop.

About us:

We supply and install up to a thousand tonnes of steel and aluminium each year across Canberra and Sydney, and our goal is to become a regular supplier to tier one builders. We believe that professional tier one builders set the standard for delivery, process, and documentation expectations, and if we can achieve well with them, we can achieve well with anyone. Our processes, systems, and quality outcomes provide us the flexibility to attract and seek work in most industrial, commercial, and residential sectors.

Our team is brimming with energetic people who are excited about what we do. Our production facility in West Wyalong specialises in fabrication and coating of structural steel and metalwork, and our project offices in Coolamon (NSW) and Kingston (ACT) work with clients and builders to design, engineer, draft, and manage installation onsite. We enjoy being able to see our work when it’s finished and know that our contributions made a difference to the quality of the outcome. The leaders of our company care greatly for the growth and happiness of employees, and our cultural expectations are promoted to support that.

Some specifics about the day-to-day:

Management of project and business financial performance using budgets and collaborative analysis/reporting,

Management of procurement, the production schedule, and quality,

Leadership of our West Wyalong team with support from our in-house HR, including hiring and onboarding,

Leadership of safety,

Experience and skills you’ll ideally possess:

A proven ability to understand and manage finances and budgets,

A proven ability to procure and process multiple projects concurrently to meet deadlines consistently,

Effective communication skills to collaborate with the team, including company directors, the workshop foreman, leading hands, tradespeople, apprentices, your finance and HR staff, as well as the team more broadly, including our estimators, project managers and suppliers, etc.

An ability to follow and implement maintenance schedules,

A high level of awareness of workplace health and safety,

The ability to work independently to self-manage deadlines as set by yourself or others.

The basics you must possess:

A high standard and expectation of quality and attention to detail,
