The Township:
The Town of Walkerville is a small, dynamic and innovative Council, which serves a community of more than 8,000 residents in the eastern metropolitan region. The residents of the Town of Walkerville are represented by a Mayor and eight Councillors.
The Position:
The Recreation & Community Team Leader plays a pivotal role in shaping The W (Walkerville Recreation Centre) as more than just a venue – it is a place where the community comes together to connect, celebrate and belong. The W has a proud history in Walkerville, evolving from its YMCA roots into a reimagined, community-driven space designed by and for its people. This role is about fostering that spirit, ensuring the centre remains a vibrant hub for sport, recreation, culture and shared experiences – becoming the heart and soul of the Township.
The Team Leader is responsible for the operation, maintenance, staffing and programming at The W, as well as managing Council programs and events more broadly. This includes developing, implementing and managing programs that promote community engagement, physical activity and overall wellbeing. The role requires strong leadership and a commitment to nurturing relationships with stakeholders – from sports clubs and schools to local groups and volunteers – to create an inclusive, dynamic and welcoming environment that reflects the heart and soul of Walkerville.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Culture:
Program Development and Implementation: Creating and coordinating a variety of community and sports programs, activities and events based on identified needs and community goals.
Community Engagement: Building relationships with diverse community members, stakeholders, and organisations to understand needs and promote participation.
Community Development: Supporting and managing key community stakeholders, such as sports clubs, bowling clubs, schools and other community groups to enhance engagement and participation.
Facility Management: Overseeing the use of community and sports facilities, ensuring they are safe, well-maintained and accessible.
Venue Booking Management: Coordinating and overseeing bookings for the recreation centre and associated spaces to ensure fair access, efficient scheduling and optimal utilisation of facilities.
Governance: Presenting and attending Council meetings and workshops to provide updates on recreation facilities and related activities.
Event Planning and Coordination: Organising and executing community events, sporting competitions and recreational activities.
Promotion and Marketing: Raising awareness of programs and opportunities through various channels, including About Town, Weekly Round Up, flyers, website and social media.
Partnership Development: Collaborating with local organisations, clubs and other stakeholders to maximise program reach and impact.
Monitoring and Evaluation: Tracking program outcomes, collecting feedback and making adjustments to improve effectiveness.
Budget Management: Assisting with the submission of funding applications and managing program budgets.
Reporting: Preparing regular reports on program activities and outcomes.
Customer Service: Providing information and support to program participants and the wider community.
Volunteer Management: Developing, implementing and overseeing strategies to recruit, train, retain and coordinate volunteers, ensuring effective integration into recreation and community programs while fostering a positive and inclusive volunteer experience.
Leadership: Providing clear direction, guidance and support to staff to ensure the effective planning, delivery and evaluation of Town of Walkerville programs, events and initiatives, while fostering a positive, collaborative and high-performance team culture.
Community Expectations:
Identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement.
Engage with key stakeholders – in line with Council’s Public Consultation Policy.
Promote a positive and professional image of Council to the community and external stakeholders.
Experience/Qualifications (Essential):
Police Clearance or willingness to obtain.
Work with Children Clearance (WWCC) or willingness to obtain.
Knowledge of Local Government and functions.
