Commissioning Manager – BESS Project

Location: Regional site + Office + Remote Contract Type: Contract

Day Rate: $900–$1,100/day + Super

Start Date: Immediate start preferred

Project Overview

We are seeking an experienced and driven Commissioning Engineer/Manager to lead the final commissioning phase of a utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. This critical role supports the engineering leadership team and is vital to ensuring successful energisation and handover of the site.

The successful candidate will work flexibly across the project site, office, and home office, coordinating with multiple stakeholders to deliver a safe, compliant, and high-quality commissioning outcome.

Key Responsibilities

Commissioning Leadership: Lead and coordinate BESS commissioning activities across OEMs, EPCs, SCADA vendors, and grid stakeholders, ensuring alignment with project schedule and energisation milestones.

Technical Oversight: Provide expert guidance during pre-commissioning, energisation, and functional testing. Review documentation and ensure compliance with relevant standards and grid requirements.

System Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve system-level issues involving inverters, batteries, SCADA, protection relays, and communication protocols (e.g. Modbus, IEC 61850).

Documentation & Handover: Manage and verify commissioning deliverables including test records, red-line markups, and handover documentation to Operations & Maintenance (O&M) teams.

Integration & Compliance: Act as a key technical interface to ensure seamless integration of BESS into broader electrical and control systems, with a strong focus on safety, quality, and grid compliance.

Safety & Risk Management: Support the development and implementation of safe work practices, HV switching procedures, and commissioning risk assessments (RAMS).

Requirements

Proven experience commissioning utility-scale BESS or similar energy infrastructure projects.

Strong understanding of electrical systems, SCADA integration, and grid compliance standards.

Familiarity with high-voltage safety procedures and relevant codes.

Excellent stakeholder coordination and communication skills.

Ability to work flexibly across site, office, and remote environments.
