An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Safety Manager to join a dedicated Queensland Government team. This role offers you the chance to play a pivotal part in shaping Queensland's passenger rail network during a period of significant transformation and growth. The successful candidate will be engaged full-time for an initial six months, with the possibility of extension. This role will be at the heart of major rail projects that are set to redefine how communities connect and travel, including key investments ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. What you'll do:
- Develop and implement comprehensive policies, guidelines, procedures, programmes, and initiatives that underpin robust safety processes while ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and standards.
- Lead the execution of Project Safety Assurance activities across multiple large-scale rail infrastructure projects, maintaining high levels of oversight and accountability.
- Monitor and maintain oversight of safety assurance activities conducted by contracted entities to ensure alignment with organisational objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare detailed reports on safety assurance and management activities for presentation to project and programme leadership teams, facilitating informed decision-making.
- Support project safety management activities by conducting risk assessments, safety observations, and developing effective risk mitigation plans tailored to each project's unique challenges.
- Collaborate closely with other project members, external contractors, and industry partners such as Queensland Rail to foster a consistent customer experience and timely delivery of outcomes.
- Ensure teams remain up-to-date on industry developments and legislative changes by disseminating relevant information and providing strategic advice.
- Utilise advanced analytical skills to identify trends in safety issues, develop proactive strategies for issue management, and drive continuous improvement across all safety-related activities.
- Some travel and occasional weekend work may be required due to project demands.
What you bring:
- A tertiary qualification in Health and Safety, Business or a related field is essential for this position.
- At least eight years' proven experience working on large rail or major infrastructure projects is required to excel in this role.
- Internal Auditor qualifications are highly regarded as they demonstrate your commitment to thorough process evaluation (Preferred).
- ICAM lead investigator certification is desirable as it enhances your ability to manage incident investigations effectively (Preferred).
- Demonstrated expertise in applying WHS acts, regulations, codes of practice, guidelines, and AS/ISO standards within complex project environments.
- Experience liaising with regulatory bodies to stay up-to-date with compliance expectations.
- Exceptional analytical skills are necessary for staying informed about safety activities, identifying trends in risk areas, and developing proactive solutions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) enables efficient planning and communication across diverse teams.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills allow you to plan strategically, implement initiatives successfully, and provide clear advice to senior management.
- A track record of keeping teams updated on industry changes demonstrates your commitment to continuous improvement.
