The Environment and Sustainability Education Officer (Waste) plays a lead role in the design, delivery and evaluation of targeted education, training, engagement and activation programs for Council, community, business and schools.
A key focus of this role is fostering partnerships with schools to embed waste education into classrooms, drive behaviour change, and inspire the next generation of environmental leaders.
Position Description - Environment and Sustainability Education Officer (Waste)
This is a 0.8 FTE position on a 3-year contract.
Key responsibilities include:
Design, implement and deliver best practice community, school and business education and behaviour change campaigns, programs and initiatives.
Design, implement and deliver community and stakeholder specific content, tools and marketing materials, maintaining consistency and synergy of Council’s waste monster brand across all executions.
Lead the implementation, continuous improvement and day-to-day management of Council’s waste volunteer program.
Explore partnerships with government agencies, commercial entities and community organisations and leverage waste education and other strategies, programs and initiatives to benefit Council, the community and other key stakeholders.
Prepare reports, business cases and coordinate grant applications.
Undertake research to better understand the drivers of existing behaviours and barriers to desired behaviour change across all stakeholder groups.
Establish clear performance targets and monitor, analyse and report on outcomes.
Contribute to the development, implementation and review of Council’s waste management policy, strategies, plans and priorities.
About you
General understanding of behaviour change principles, with a focus on education and community engagement.
Demonstrated experience developing and delivering engaging programs in educational or community settings, with an ability to connect with children, teachers and families.
General understanding of waste management practices and challenges.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to suit a variety of audiences, including different age groups and community sectors.
Creative, solutions-focused mindset and a practical, evidence-based approach to program design, problem solving and negotiation.
Excellent organisation and time management skills, with the ability to work independently and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Tertiary qualification or relevant equivalent experience in education, training, community engagement, marketing or a related discipline.
Passionate about education, sustainability and making a positive impact in the community.
Hold a current South Australian Class C driver’s licence.
Hold a current DHS Working with Children Check (or be willing to obtain one).
Willingness to undertake a pre-employment medical.

Salary range is between $91,908 to $98,028 (Full Time Equivalent) plus superannuation guarantee and will be negotiated commensurate with skills, experience and qualifications.
