(Level B) $114,917 - $135,932 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies.

Full time, continuing position available.

Classics and Ancient History has a long and proud tradition at the University of Adelaide, where a Hughes Chair in Classics was one of the founding professorships in 1874. From 1 January 2026, Classics is part of the Archaeology and Classical Studies major in the Bachelor of Arts at Adelaide University.

This post aligns with our new emphasis on the socio-cultural history of the Greek and Roman worlds. The eight-course major offers introductory topics in archaeological and historical methods, Classical and Australian archaeology, laboratory techniques and field methods, and the socio-cultural aspects of the Mediterranean exemplified in Alexander’s globalised world of Hellenization, cultural beliefs and concepts in mythology, and the origins of democracy. Many of the courses engage in comparative analysis with the modern world. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute primarily to the courses in Classical Studies.

For information on the new curriculum, see the AU Website https://adelaideuni.edu.au/study/degrees/bachelor-of-arts-archaeology-and-classical-studies/

To be successful you will need:

  • A PhD in Ancient Greek or Roman History with a focus on cultural or social history.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Ancient History and/or Classical Studies.
  • Demonstrated track record of research including high-quality publications and ability to attract external research funding.
  • Excellent track record of attracting competitive grant funding and demonstrated plans for future grant applications.
  • Ability to contribute to the culture and collegial life of Archaeology and Classical Studies and the School of Humanities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work within academic teams.
