HOBAN Recruitment, in proud partnership with the NSW State Emergency Service (SES), is calling on motivated and reliable individuals to join a dynamic casual support pool for the 132 500 emergency hotline. This vital service connects the public to help during severe weather events like floods, storms, and tsunamis.
About the Role:
As a Flood and Storm Call Operator, your primary responsibility is to serve as the first point of contact for the general public during severe weather emergencies such as floods, storms, and tsunamis. You will respond to inbound calls through an emergency hotline (e.g., 132 500), assessing the nature and urgency of each situation. Your role involves gathering critical information, calmly reassuring callers, and accurately recording and escalating cases as needed. You must maintain a professional and empathetic tone, even when dealing with distressed or vulnerable individuals.
- Answer inbound calls from the public needing emergency assistance or information
- Log real-time data and escalate calls in a fast-paced environment
- Support NSW SES operations during periods of high call volume due to extreme weather
In addition to taking calls, your duties include real-time data entry, logging requests and incidents into emergency response systems, and ensuring all details are recorded accurately and swiftly. You may also be required to perform general administrative tasks and support coordination efforts within the emergency services team. As emergencies can happen at any time, operators must be flexible with their availability, often working overnight, weekend, or extended shifts. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are essential in ensuring a timely and effective response to those in need.
This is ad hoc, casual work-perfect for those who are flexible and ready to step up during critical events. You'll need to be available on-call (within 45 minutes) or rostered in advance. Shifts can be as short as 3 hours, though most are 12 hours (Day: 6am-6pm / Night: 6pm-6am).
The main responsibilities in this role include:
- Receiving inbound calls from the general public in need of assistance or advice during periods of floods, storms and/or tsunamis
- High level data entry, typing while on calls logging information
- Providing outstanding and efficient customer service to the general public
- General administrative duties if requested
What You'll Need:
- Strong customer service skills and a calm phone manner
- Fast and accurate data entry (35+ WPM minimum)
- Solid computer navigation skills
- Flexibility to take shifts across 7 days, including weekends and overnights
- Willingness to undergo a National Police Check
Work from home requirements
- Prepared to conduct 1 day training package on location at NSW State Emergency Service Head Quarters located in Wollongong.
- Minimum equipment of:
- A computer with video capability
- Internet connection
- A phone service (landline or mobile)
- Headset
- All Working from home shifts must be conducted within New South Wales.
