ARL Laboratory Services Pty Ltd is a leading provider of Mechanical and Metallurgical testing services. We work with clients across the engineering, fabrication, and construction sectors.
We are currently sponsoring a qualified candidate for a full-time role focused on both Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Destructive Testing, with hands-on laboratory and engineering involvement.
Position Summary: The successful candidate will be working as part of our Mechanical/Metallurgical Lab, conducting a range of tests and evaluations on metallic components, welds, and structures to ensure compliance with relevant standards and client specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods such as visual inspection, magnetic particle testing, dye penetrant testing, and ultrasonic testing under supervision or certification level.
Perform Destructive Testing, including tensile, impact, bend, and hardness tests on metals and weld samples.
Prepare and analyze weld macrosections and microsamples, identifying typical weld discontinuities such as cracks, porosity, inclusions, etc.
Operate and maintain mechanical testing machines (universal testing machine, Charpy impact tester, hardness testers).
Perform metallographic preparation: cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching of specimens.
Conduct microstructural analysis using optical microscopy (10x-1000x).
Interpret results and prepare technical test reports in accordance with Australian and International standards (AS, ISO, ASTM).
Maintain laboratory instruments and calibration records.
Assist in root cause failure investigations and quality control projects.
Candidate Requirements:
Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
Minimum 3-5 years' experience in a testing or lab environment, ideally including NDT and mechanical testing.
Familiarity with engineering drawings, test procedures, and relevant standards.
Strong attention to detail with analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Basic proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Desirable: NDT Level 2 certification (any method) or willingness to pursue certification.
Desirable: Basic machining or workshop skills.
