Within this operational environment, the Governance and Communications function is responsible for upholding compliance with legislative obligations, maintaining assurance frameworks, and managing external requests under FOI, PID, and privacy legislation. The work is meaningful, varied, and high-trust - with opportunities to contribute to continuous improvement.
The Opportunity
This is a strong opportunity for a governance or compliance professional to join a small team focused on improving transparency, privacy, and decision-making processes across a national agency. You’ll work alongside an experienced Assistant Director and gain broad exposure to legislative frameworks and whole-of-agency policy matters.
You’ll be involved in the management of FOI requests, privacy complaints and breaches, and public interest disclosures - offering advice, recording key data, and contributing to internal reporting. The role is a good fit for someone who is comfortable working under scrutiny, meets deadlines with care, and brings a balanced, professional approach to sensitive case work.

The Role
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Governance Operations, you’ll take ownership of a range of compliance-related matters, working independently but with support where needed.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing FOI requests, privacy complaints, disclosures, and other external information requests in line with legislation
- Operating as an authorised officer under the FOI and PID Acts, and as Privacy Officer under the Australian Government Agencies Privacy Code
- Liaising with external regulators such as the OAIC and Ombudsman, and supporting internal stakeholders
- Gathering, recording and presenting case data to support reporting and internal decision-making
- Contributing to guidance materials and helping to assess risks and obligations related to privacy or disclosure
- Maintaining accurate records and timelines in a small governance team
The Ideal Person
You’re someone with a practical understanding of legislative compliance and experience handling sensitive or complex case work. You may come from another government agency or a regulated private or not-for-profit setting, and you're confident interpreting legislation and producing clear, well-documented recommendations.
You're methodical, reliable, and respectful. You can manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail. You’re not easily flustered by deadlines or ambiguity and value working in a professional, process-driven team.
Experience managing FOI or privacy matters is highly regarded, but not essential; what matters most is your ability to work ethically, independently, and with care.
Salay / Rate
- $60/hr – $75/hr + Super
- Initial 6-month contract with potential for 2 x 3-month extensions
- Hybrid work available (typically 2 WFH per week after onboarding)
- Baseline Security Clearance required (must be active at commencement)
