Reports To: Principal and Teaching Staff
Location: The Avenue School, Ferntree Gully, Victoria
Employment Type: Part-time 4 days a week Mon - Thursday
Commencement: Immediate start

The Avenue School is a specialist setting in Ferntree Gully dedicated to supporting students with complex social, emotional, and behavioural needs. Our therapeutic and relationship-based approach to education creates a safe and nurturing environment where students can re-engage in learning, develop resilience, and experience success both academically and personally.
Position Purpose:
We are seeking dedicated and empathetic Education Support / Teacher’s Aides to work closely with our teaching and wellbeing teams. This role involves supporting students with higher needs academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviourally through one-on-one assistance, small group work, and the consistent application of behaviour support strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide direct support to students in the classroom, helping them stay engaged, regulated, and involved in learning.
Implement behaviour and learning strategies as guided by teaching and wellbeing staff.
Support students in developing independence, social skills, and emotional regulation.
Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Behaviour Support Plans, and Safety Plans.
Assist students during transitions, excursions, and structured physical or outdoor activities.
Maintain accurate and confidential records of student progress and incidents, as required.
Build strong, trusting relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, wellbeing staff, and school leaders to support student success.
Actively contribute to the school’s calm, structured, and trauma-informed learning environment.
Key Selection Criteria:
Experience supporting students with high anxiety and school refusal.
Experience supporting students with social-emotional and behavioural challenges (desirable in specialist or alternative settings).
Understanding of trauma-informed practices and the impact of complex trauma on learning and behaviour.
Ability to build rapport with disengaged or vulnerable young people through consistency, patience, and empathy.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to support effective teamwork.
Capacity to remain calm and effective in challenging or high-pressure situations.
Willingness to receive direction, participate in training, and reflect on professional practice.
Essential Requirements:
Certificate III or IV in Education Support, Youth Work, or equivalent (or working toward).
Current Working With Children Check (mandatory).
Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
Additional training or experience in mental health, special education, or positive behaviour support is highly desirable.
