The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to recruit enthusiastic people for the position of State Lead, Census Engagement & Coordination, to support our Census 2026 Inclusive Strategies & Engagement team.
These are temporary positions up to 18 months duration. Successful applicants will initially be engaged on a 12 month contract, with a further contract extension up to six months.
About the role
• lead small teams of Census field staff and collaborate with Inclusive Strategy & Engagement or state / territory Census colleagues to achieve planned outcomes using a nationally consistent approach
• plan and undertake state / territory level cross-cutting engagement (using templates and materials provided)
• facilitate the coordination of engagement in your state / territory (using resources developed by the National Cross-cutting Engagement Team)
• recruit and onboard engagement field staff for your state / territory
• support engagement by other Census teams
• provide engagement support materials/ templates to teams in your state / territory
• monitor, manage and escalate state / territory strategy risks as required
• assist the national lead to encourage and support CRM use by teams in your state / territory
• conduct evaluation of your state / territory team at the end of operations.
About you
The successful candidates will possess all, or most of the following:
• strong stakeholder engagement skills (including ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve shared outcomes)
• strong project management skills
• strong oral and written communication skills
• ability to deliver in a fast-paced environment
• experience working with, or a good understanding of, vulnerable community groups
• team management experience in fast paced environments.
About the team
The Census 2026 Inclusive Strategies & Engagement section focus on particular population groups and communities who may face additional or different challenges to completing the Census. Our work across all of the strategies involves a lot of engagement with people, communities and sectors to understand those challenges, and develop resources and processes to assist everyone in being able to access and complete their Census.
The Cross-cutting Engagement Coordination team involves coordinating our efforts across the Census program in terms of engaging with external stakeholders, recording stakeholder meetings and interactions and minimising duplication of engagement by different areas of Census. It also undertakes and leads field staff to plan and undertake engagement with key stakeholders.
