The University of Queensland Student Union (UQU) is a not-for-profit organisation, independent of the University of Queensland that supports and represents the student community by actively promoting a positive, fun, healthy and supportive student Experience. This is a unique organisation, operating numerous food, beverage, entertainment and retail outlets on UQ campuses, as well as Student Advocacy and Support, and student clubs and societies at St Lucia and Gatton Campuses. UQU employs over 150 staff, a percentage of whom, being elected students, change annually.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an energetic and experienced Retail Supervisor to lead and oversee the operations of three retail outlets – Lolly Shop, Op Shop, and ETC – all located at the St. Lucia campus.

A bit more about our outlets:

• Lolly Shop - UQU's one stop shop for all things sweet and delicious! We sell a variety of popular confectionery, drinks and snacks and see a high volume of customers, particularly during university teaching periods.
• Op Shop - Providing high quality, second hand clothing products at student friendly prices.
• ETC - For all your stationery needs on campus.

This role involves providing hands-on leadership and consistent supervision and support to your teams on a day-to-day basis.

Reporting to the Hospitality & Entertainment Area Manager, you’ll work collaboratively to drive performance, support staff development, and contribute to the continued success of our business. As this is a retail role, you’ll also deliver exceptional customer service while fostering a positive team environment.

This role also involves:

• Plan, prepare, and monitor rosters to meet organisational needs
• Ensuring the outlets are professionally maintained internally and externally
• Maintaining up-to-date product knowledge
• Initiating and implementing outlet specials and promotions
• Assisting the Area Manager with the preparation of the budget, and ensuring the outlets are adhering to the budget
• Managing stock-takes
• Stock rotation and control
• Adhering to outlet-specific GP%
• Ensuring that policies and procedures are being adhered to

• Thrives on providing excellent customer service and ensuring efficient operations
• Can juggle competing priorities, being able to multi-task and effectively plan your day to ensure you are meeting the needs of your team and the outlets you supervise
• Loves problem solving and doesn't shy away from a challenge
• Actively seeks feedback to continuously improve themselves, their team and the business
• Gets the 'ebbs and flows' of retail consumer habits, especially on a University campus where we have high peak periods during Semester and lower foot traffic during holidays etc
• Understands that our people are our most valuable asset and works each day to provide a brilliant work environment for their team.

In addition to the above, our ideal candidate will have:

• Recruiting, training and mentoring staff
• POS systems (SwiftPOS knowledge highly regarded)
• GP% and pricing
• Working with, and adhering to, set budgets with key targets each year

• A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a retail supervisor (experience in stationery store/newsagency highly regarded)
