Your role

This Aboriginal Identified Services and Programs Officer role plays a vital part in improving outcomes for Aboriginal people in custody and under supervision within Corrective Services NSW. The role directly supports culturally appropriate program delivery, case management, and reintegration planning, ensuring services are aligned with the unique cultural and social needs of Aboriginal individuals, families, and communities.

Working within a trauma-informed and culturally safe framework, this position helps address the overrepresentation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system by strengthening engagement, building trust, and supporting connection to culture, Country, and community. The officer contributes to the delivery of targeted interventions that are both evidence-based and culturally grounded, helping to reduce reoffending and improve wellbeing and social outcomes for Aboriginal people.

What you'll do

  • You will assist inmates with pre-release and oversee the documentation and case notes on all inmates receiving services as required.
  • This opportunity is for those who are truly passionate about making an impact upon the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • You can help achieve this by guiding your people to transform their lives through intervention and inclusion which in turn benefits the whole community.

What we're looking for

  • We are seeking a proactive and dedicated individual with a background in social work, or professional experience working with individuals who display challenging behaviours.
  • A positive minded individual who is resilient by nature and able to effectively build positive relationships within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Cultural capability is essential to this role. The successful candidate must demonstrate:

  • A deep understanding of Aboriginal cultures, kinship systems, and the ongoing impacts of colonisation, intergenerational trauma, and systemic disadvantage.
  • The ability to engage respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal people in custody, their families, and community representatives.
  • Strong cultural identity and/or cultural knowledge that informs decision-making, service delivery, and advocacy.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal colleagues to ensure culturally responsive practice.
  • A commitment to ongoing cultural learning, self-awareness, and reflective practice.

As an Identified role, this position is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons

Where a position is identified, an applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification under the exception in Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

There are two alternatives to confirming your Aboriginality, one of which must be uploaded to be considered for the role as follows. Either will be accepted:

Confirmation of Aboriginality form

or

Written confirmation from 2-3 Aboriginal organisations within the community in which you live/work, which addresses the three criteria listed below:

  • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
  • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and
  • is accepted as a such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.
