At The Kids Research Institute, we have developed unique tools that can specifically target genetic mutations to revert them from a mutated to normal condition. Our patented technology has enabled us to develop these tools to target mutations that cause mitochondrial diseases as specific genetic treatments for these devastating disorders. Our discoveries will provide much needed hope for patients and families affected by mitochondrial diseases.

The Opportunity

Do you have a Biochemistry or Genetics background and are looking for your next role where you can gain relevant experience and make a difference?

Our Mitochondrial Medicine and Biology team here at The Kids Research Institute is conducting research into mitochondrial diseases which are devastating disorders for which there are no cures or effective treatments.

We are looking for a passionate Research Assistant to assist and work alongside the Head of the Mitochondrial Team. The Research Assistant will support the team with a wide range of duties including but not limited to:

Laboratory tasks and experiments using transgenic mice, mammalian cell culture, yeast, Escherichia coli, and purified proteins.

Interpreting and analysing data.

Perform limited troubleshooting and calibration of instruments.

Detailed lab book record keeping.

Assist in the planning and preparation of events.

Work collaboratively to promote and build the reputation of the research group with the wider community, stakeholders, and researchers.

Conveniently based at Perth Children Hospital this position will be offered on a full-time basis for one year (with the potential to be extended).

About You

This position would suit someone with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Genetics or related discipline with experience working with transgenic mice.

Along with this, the key to your success will be your demonstrated skills and experience in the following:

Experience in biochemistry and cell and molecular biology.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated organisation and time management skills and the ability to prioritise workloads.

Excellent attention to detail.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative and work within a team.
