City of Gold Coast
Posted 4 days ago
We are seeking a motivated and technically capable Civil Engineer to join our Engineering and Landscape Assessment team. In this role, you will deliver engineering assessments of development applications across a range of civil disciplines, working collaboratively with internal teams and industry professionals to influence positive infrastructure outcomes for the City.
As you grow in the role, you’ll be supported by experienced mentors and given opportunities to build your technical skills, expand into more complex work, and help shape how we deliver high-quality, consistent, and practical development outcomes. This is a great opportunity for a solutions-focused professional who values teamwork, learning, and real-world impact.
About the team:
City Development is responsible for the management and assessment of development applications, developer contributions, planning appeals, and providing expert planning, building, and technical advice. The branch plays a critical role in supporting sustainable and well-designed growth across the City.
Within City Development, the Engineering and Landscape Assessment (ELA) Business Unit provides technical advice and assessment of civil and landscape-related aspects of development applications, including operational works (detailed design). ELA works closely with planning, infrastructure, and asset management teams to ensure integrated and informed decision-making.
The team offers opportunities to work on diverse and significant development projects, collaborate with industry professionals, and contribute to shaping the future of the City through high-quality, solutions-oriented engineering assessments.
About your new role:
As a Civil Engineer, you will undertake engineering assessments and contribute to shaping infrastructure outcomes that support the City’s growth. You’ll apply your technical knowledge across key engineering disciplines and develop your capability through diverse projects, strong mentoring, and collaborative teamwork.
This role supports your professional development while also giving you the chance to influence practical, real-world infrastructure decisions in a high-performing and supportive environment.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Undertake engineering assessments of development applications (including MCU, ROL, and OPW) across a range of civil engineering disciplines, progressing in complexity as capability and experience grows.
Deliver clear, practical, and solutions-focused engineering advice that aligns with relevant legislation, planning schemes, and engineering standards.
Prepare well-reasoned technical memorandums and recommendations that support timely, consistent, and defensible decision-making.
Collaborate effectively with senior engineers, planners, external applicants and consultants, and other stakeholders to resolve technical issues and support integrated development outcomes.
Participate in pre-lodgement meetings, site inspections, and technical discussions to develop context-specific advice and strengthen assessment outcomes.
Actively pursue technical development through mentoring, feedback, and on-the-job learning, while also contributing to a positive team culture by sharing knowledge and working cooperatively with peers.
Provide informal support to Graduate and Student Engineers by modelling professional standards and contributing to a collaborative and supportive work environment.
In keeping with the City’s commitment to flexible working, we are open to exploring flexible work arrangements that help balance life and work commitments while delivering high-quality outcomes. We currently have permanent and fixed term contract positions available.
We're looking for people who have:
Bring experience in engineering design, assessment, or development engineering within a local government or consulting environment.
Possess technical knowledge across relevant civil disciplines, with the ability to interpret and apply engineering standards, guidelines and relevant planning legislation.
Communicate clearly and professionally, both in writing and in person, with the ability to explain technical concepts to a range of audiences.
Take a proactive, solutions-focused approach to challenges, applying sound judgment and professionalism to support good development outcomes.
Are open to learning, feedback, and mentoring, and take initiative to grow and develop within a collaborative team.
Demonstrate strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
Build positive, cooperative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support high-quality development outcomes.
Hold a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent knowledge.
