We are looking for a motivated and technically skilled Transport Engineer to join our City Development Branch. In this role, you’ll assess a variety of development applications and contribute to practical transport solutions that support a connected, sustainable, and liveable Gold Coast.

Reporting to the Coordinator Operational Works Assessment, this role focuses on traffic impacts on the road network and required mitigation measures, access design, car parking supply and design, design of service vehicle facilities, and integration with active transport networks. This role is an ideal opportunity to grow your technical capability, engage with industry, and help shape the future of the City

About the team:

City Development is responsible for the management and assessment of development applications, developer contributions, planning appeals, research, and the provision of expert planning, building, and technical advice.

Within City Development, the Engineering and Landscape Assessment (ELA) Business Unit is responsible for the assessment of operational work applications (detailed designs) and providing specialist advice on engineering and landscape matters in the context of development applications (such as reconfiguration of lot or material change of use). ELA works closely with colleagues in planning, infrastructure, and asset management to ensure decisions are well-informed.

The ELA Business Unit provides excellent opportunities to collaborate with industry professionals on development applications and to contribute to shaping the City’s future through the provision of expert technical assessments and advice.

About your new role:

As a Transport Engineer, you will assess development applications across a range of urban contexts. Your focus will include traffic impacts on the road network and required mitigation measures, access design, car parking supply and design, design of service vehicle facilities, and integration with active transport networks. You will prepare detailed technical reports and provide advice that aligns with planning policy, City standards, and transport objectives.

You’ll also participate in pre-lodgement meetings, site inspections, and internal workshops—gaining practical experience while learning from experienced engineers and technical leaders. As you grow in the role, you’ll be supported with mentoring and training to expand your technical responsibilities and take on more complex assessments.

This is an excellent opportunity for early to mid-career engineers who are passionate about shaping transport outcomes and are looking to build a long-term career with impact.

Your key responsibilities will include:

Assess development applications (e.g. MCU, ROL, OPW) from a transport perspective, progressing in complexity as technical capability develops, providing well-informed recommendations that align with City policies and planning objectives.

Prepare detailed technical recommendations and assessment reports that demonstrate sound judgement and compliance with planning schemes, policies and legislation.

Lead the review of moderately complex applications and support the review of higher-risk complex applications under the guidance of Senior Transport Engineers and the Coordinator.

Engage proactively and collaborate with planners, engineers, consultants and applicants to resolve technical matters and achieve integrated, practical, and solutions focused outcomes.

Represent the Transport team at meetings, pre-lodgement discussions, and site inspections, clearly communicating technical requirements and expectations.

Contribute to continuous improvement by actively engaging in technical training, addressing knowledge gaps through collaboration with senior staff, and supporting team knowledge-sharing. As experience grows, assist in mentoring junior engineers to build overall team capability.

Build proficiency in internal systems, processes, and technical standards to support consistent, high-quality advice.

Maintain consistent communication with the Coordinator, providing updates on application progress, seeking guidance as needed, and highlighting emerging challenges.

In keeping with the City’s commitment to flexible working, the City is willing to work with people who have commitments outside of work and negotiating a flexible work arrangement. We have jobs which need doing, and we are open to trying new ways of getting the work done!

We're looking for people who have:

Consistently deliver high-quality service to both internal and external stakeholders, with a strong focus on collaboration, customer outcomes, and practical, solution-oriented advice, building and maintaining effective relationships with internal departments and industry partners.

Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment, and consistently deliver high-quality service to both internal and external stakeholders, with the ability to understand and respond to customer needs and expectations.

Have relevant professional experience in a transport assessment, traffic engineering, or development assessment role.

Can interpret and apply planning schemes, engineering standards, and legislative frameworks relevant to development assessment, ensuring advice is accurate, consistent, and aligned with City outcomes

Are adaptable and proactive, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Maintain a constructive and professional attitude toward feedback and continuous improvement, contributing to a positive, high-performing team culture.

Are committed to innovation, continuous improvement, and contributing to the City’s vision for a sustainable and connected future.

Hold a Bachelor Degree in Engineering, a related discipline or similar equivalent knowledge.
