BDAC is an ACCO (Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation) registered as a member under the umbrella of VACCHO (Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation) and represented nationally through NACCHO (National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation).

BDAC was founded to represent and provide services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on Djaara Country.

The Accountant, working under the guidance of the Finance Manager, is responsible for managing the financial accounting functions of BDAC, including the preparation of financial statements, management of financial reporting, accounts payable and receivables, and payroll.

This role involves assisting a team of junior finance staff, providing leadership and guidance to ensure the accurate and timely completion of accounting tasks. The Accountant plays a key role in supporting the financial health and strategic goals of BDAC.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation of monthly financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Australian Accounting Standards.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial reports to management, highlighting key financial metrics and providing insights for decision-making.
  • Ensure all financial records are maintained in accordance with relevant standards and internal policies.
  • Provide expert guidance to team members across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
  • Support the development of team capability by sharing knowledge, mentoring peers, and contributing to a collaborative learning environment.
  • Preparation and review of EFT, outgoing invoices, and payroll runs.
  • Assist in the preparation and management of program budgets, including monitoring and working with program managers in relation to actual performance against budgeted figures.
  • Provide support in financial forecasting, identifying trends, and making recommendations for cost-saving measures and revenue enhancement.
  • Assist with the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and providing necessary documentation.
  • Manage monthly reconciliations of balance sheet accounts, including bank reconciliations, and resolve any discrepancies.
  • Support management in strategic financial planning, including financial modelling and analysis of potential business opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support the finance team.

Key Accountabilities

Ensure that the detail in the BDAC ledger is accurate, up to date and reconciled.

Ensure the accuracy of financial statements and reports in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and relevant financial regulations.

Maintain compliance with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements.

Achieve high levels of productivity and accuracy within the accounting team through effective leadership and teamwork.

Ensure accuracy and timeliness of payroll, suppliers’ payments, and revenue recognition.

Ensuring internal controls are applied and finance system profiles and access levels are managed.

Provide valuable financial insights and analysis to support the decision-making processes

Key Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated understanding of Australian Accounting Standards.
  • Demonstrated understanding of non-profit accounting procedures.
  • Experience working in a finance team within a multi-division enterprise.
  • Extensive knowledge of the inter-relationship of the ledger and budget development and management reporting.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics) and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including working with senior managers and stakeholders.

Education, Training and/or Competencies

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Professional accounting qualification (e.g., CPA Australia, CA ANZ) is required or near completion.

Preferred/Desired

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting, with supervisory or management experience desirable.
  • Strong experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and audit management.
  • Experience in a not-for-profit and/or community services organisation highly regarded
