About the NSW Ombudsman
Government agencies touch and impact the lives of the people of NSW every day, and we are there to make sure those interactions are fair. Government is complex and people need to have confidence that someone is holding government agencies to account if their actions are unreasonable, wrong or unlawful.
We are that someone. We are the organisation that shines a light on serious wrong conduct in the delivery of government services. Our ultimate goal is that everyone receives the right services and fair treatment from the agencies we oversight.
Our scope is broad. We cover services for vulnerable families, including the delivery of community services funded by government; local councils; correctional and youth justice centres; education; environment protection and public transport – to name a few!
We work to help resolve problems at an individual level, as well as looking at the bigger picture to promote system improvements in public administration and in the delivery of community services. We are confident in the knowledge that our work will give voice to the individual and bring fairness and balance to how the government delivers to the public it serves.
We are committed to providing a range of career development opportunities. We aim to guide and help our people with the skills they need to lead our organisation and give the most impact to what they do.
About the Child Death Review Unit
The Child Death Review Unit (CDRU) is responsible for NSW Ombudsman’s functions in Parts 5A and 6 of the Community Services (Complaints, Reviews and Monitoring) Act 1993 (CS CRAMA) which include:
convening and supporting the NSW Child Death Review Team – a group of experts in healthcare, child development, child protection and research, as well as representatives of key government agencies – to maintain a register of all child deaths in NSW, classify those deaths according to cause, demographic criteria and other relevant factors, identify trends and patterns relating to those deaths, undertake research, and make recommendations that may assist in preventing child deaths (Part 5A), and
reviewing the deaths of children in circumstances of abuse or neglect, and the deaths of children in care or detention. A key focus of this work is identifying practice and systems issues that may contribute to deaths, or that may expose other children to risks in the future (Part 6).
The Child Death Reviews Unit has several strategies in place to support staff wellbeing given the sensitive nature of the work across the unit. Please contact the recruitment team if you have any questions about the wellbeing supports available.
The Role
The Health Review Officer undertakes analysis and reviews of the deaths of children focused on care and treatment within health settings, collects data and information associated with the deaths of children, and prepares reports and correspondence. The Health Review Officer assists with projects or initiatives aimed at preventing or reducing the likelihood of these deaths, and related issues.
The nature of death reviews can be distressing, and the office provides avenues for support and debriefing. The Review Officer will also utilise their well-developed self-care skills.

About NSW Ombudsman
The NSW Ombudsman is an independent and impartial watchdog. Our job is to make sure that agencies we watch over fulfill their functions properly and improve their delivery of services to the public.
We watch over most public sector and many private sector agencies and their staff. Our role is to make sure these agencies and their staff do their jobs properly, meeting their responsibilities to the community.
We help agencies within our jurisdiction to address problems with their performance. These problems may be uncovered by complaints from the public or by people who work for those agencies. Problems may also come to our attention through our work in scrutinising agency systems, overseeing investigations or reviewing the delivery of services.
Our work is guided by a range of legislation, including the Ombudsman Act 1974.
