About the area

The University of Western Australia (UWA) undertakes internationally recognised research in ocean and coastal science and engineering. It hosts national marine research infrastructure, including the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS), and is a key contributor to national marine and coastal science. UWA is a Principal Participant of IMOS and is a key partner in the development of the national Coastal Research Infrastructure (CoastRI) initiative, a cross-National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) collaboration involving 13 national research infrastructure facilities focused on enhancing coastal observations, modelling, data sharing, and infrastructure across Australia.

UWA also hosts three national IMOS facilities: the National Coastal Wave Buoy Facility, the Australian National Facility for Ocean Gliders, and the High Frequency Radar Facility. These are housed within the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (IOMRC), a major collaborative research hub located at UWA’s Crawley campus. UWA is also a founding partner of the Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI), contributing to strategic marine research partnerships across the State.

The WA Coastal Engagement Coordinator will play a strategic role in coordinating WA-based coastal activities within this national framework.

About the opportunity

  • You will provide strategic coordination and stakeholder engagement to identify and advance Western Australia’s coastal observational and research infrastructure priorities.
  • You will coordinate the integration of WA coastal initiatives within the national CoastRI program, a cross-NCRIS collaboration involving 13 national research infrastructure facilities.
  • You will foster cross-sector partnerships to enhance co-investment, shared use, and long-term planning for coastal infrastructure. The role also involves translating emerging science, policy, and community needs into actionable infrastructure priorities aligned with best practices.

About you

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in marine or environmental science, coastal management, coastal engineering, science communication, environmental policy, or a related field, or demonstrated equivalent competency.
  • Substantial experience in stakeholder engagement, strategic planning, or coordination within the research, environmental or government sectors.
  • Experience managing project budgets and financial tracking in research or stakeholder-focused environments (desirable)
  • Understanding of coastal science policy and research issues in Western Australia (desirable).
  • Experience developing funding proposals or coordinating cross-institutional collaborations.

Special Requirements:

  • Occasional travel within the state may be required.
  • Current “C” class driver’s licence.
